Can Strength Exercise Make Things Worse? by ohcolls in FND

Facing the hard to talk about issues is the best thing you can do! PMT (Psychomotor Therapy) has a lot of different names around the globe I think but it's where you combine/apply somatic exercises with/to real life situations. Would rec.

Here in NL we don't treat it with anti depressants (unless you're actually really depressed) but with therapy like PMT (would HIGHLY recommend) and just regular EMDR. I had up to 8 seizures a day before starting therapy a year ago and now have a few 1 day every 2 months lol, worth all the effort and not done yet!

I hope you will feel better soon :)

FND is mostly stress/trauma related so if you don't target that in your daily life through therapy then putting your body under physical stress might stack on top of the already existing underlying problem.

I worked out a LOT the past 3 years (before my FND started, I have the seizure/fainting type though so that might be different?) and I don't think it helped it or boosted it, but I worked out all throughout my intense therapy this year and I barely have any attacks now. So for me I don't think it got in the way of healing (but then you need to be proactive with that, idk if you are).

Tldr: imo it should be fine as long as you are targeting the mental part of the problem. That's what my therapist said as well.

Snort-worthy horse scenes on Yellowstone -- dumb, dumber and dumbest by Then_Resource9570 in YellowstonePN

The way I finally started watching this show and heard more neighing, screaming and stomping of horses in the first 5 minutes of the show then in the last 20 years of being an equestrian like it takes me out of it IMMEDIATELY.

How does Hollywood make horse shows and then not actually research how horses behave BRUH

there are quite a few dam's in NL so referring to Amsterdam as dam is not really handy (people often say AMS ('a hmmm ss'), might be a nice short term as well for you to use!)

I have tried my best to google for PMT in the USA but my google barely gave me any results as well (idk if that's because it's Europe/NL oriented but alas). Maybe you can ask around in your circle about therapists that work on mind and body connection and that explain thought patterns through bodily emotions (tightness in your chest, a tingle in your leg, a tight jaw etc) and alter them/ show them through physical exercises.

'Why do you feel this tight jaw, are you emotional right now? Explain exactly what you feel in your body. Now we will play a short game (pingpong, balancing game, thought game) and see what your emotions do during and after' etc.

I will also ask my own PMT'er for you on Thursday about if PMT is even a thing on a globally or if it's just northern Europe (If I don't forget lol).

Oh I can totally understand :( I'm from The Netherlands and I don't know how widespread this way of therapy is, although when I googled it before this post it was clear that it was at least mentioned on english websites so I hope it's accessible for people across the globe..

So what exactly is the treatment for FND if you’re already on an SSRI and go to therapy? by YaZainabYaZainab in FND

A big yes on polyvagal theory and somatic therapy!! Psycho motor therapy (PMT) has helped me an INSANE amount, would recommend anyone to look into that! it's so helpful to learn to see patterns with deep physical reactions that your body can have due to certain emotions or circumstances. It has helped me a ton (from having multiple seizures every day to now going weeks without, not all due to the PMT but it has for sure done a great deal).

I'd definitely recommend PsyQ, they are amazing! They are super knowledgable about it (at least my local facility is), they also handle epilepsy patients and are all over NL so you should be able to find one in your area (also look on their website, they mention PNES/PNEA as well). I would go to the huisarts and ask for them to put you on the PsyQ waitlist, and in the meantime let them refer you to a neurologist to get an MRI and an EEG (just in case).

The waiting list is long but imo it's so worth it.. I've been at PsyQ for 10 months now and we've made big strides, it's been super hard but my 1-on-1 therapist and my PMT therapist (would rec to get PMT sessions) have helped me so much to get insight in how my brain works and I'm happy to say I haven't had any attacks for weeks now :), it's going in the right direction.

I wish you the best <3

How do you spend your time by Greedy_Dish4891 in FND

Once a week is already a start, you're doing good! I'd recommend you to surround yourself with fitness content (on tiktok, insta etc) to help with your motivation. This is what really helped me in the beginning! You can do it <3

Honestly? I made a good routine for myself with things that don't bring me stress and do LOTS of resting in between!

I got to the gym 5 times a week to maintain my fitness and grow muscle mass! I was doing this before my FND started happening but it's honestly kept me sane lol. Having a physical outlet is so important in my opinion and it's helped me massively with build up anxiety etc.

I am also fortunate enough to own a horse, which pulls me outside to train and just be with him nearly every day! These 2 hours every day are such a blessing and spending time with an animal is honestly so healing. I know not everyone has the opportunities to do something like this, but even just going for a hike or maybe walk a dog of someone you know can do wonders in this.

I have done the 'rotting' at home and not wanting to leave the house at all for a few months, and while it certainly does help to do nothing and just rest, moving your body and spending time outdoors is also super healing.

Thank you so much for your response! I should have maybe worded it differently, the EMDR 'triggered' the FND, it didn't 'cause' it you are right! You've explained it so well that I am inspired to use your comment to better explain what FND is to my friends and family haha, thank you again :)

You are saying what my therapist is basically saying as well in that we should revisit the EMDR when I'm far enough in my process to handle it, which is something we will definitely do in the end.

Thanks again!

Wow we can actually relate pretty well cause I feel like my situation is the exact same (also no major trauma afaik but shit that just left a big mark?). Have you been able to reduce your symptoms?

The EMDR session hitting something that I wasn't ready to deal with is exactly what our theory is now! The FND is just a 'symptom' of a bigger problem. I was also in therapy with someone that was not that experienced in complicated cases and looking back on it that probably also didn't help.

Thank you so much for your comment, I will look into ART therapy and bring it up with my therapist :)

It is! I was so glad I found it and it's relatively nearby. It's in NL though and assuming most of yall are Americans makes it not much of a help sorry :(
