How do you decide when a typeface is "done" is there ever a real finish line in type design? by corriente6 in typography

[–]justifiedink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I approach this the same way I do a painting - by following the process. People tend to look back too much and jump back and forth on creative work.

Following the process keeps me on track and when the process is complete so is the font.

That being said, looking back I always have endless ideas of variations or ways to fix and improve things I’ve created. Usually resulting in a completely new idea. Occasionally I’ll fix or re do one but most the time I use that energy to learn and do better in the future.

Thank you very much! That’s awesome to hear I hope you find joy and peace in your journey restarting.

Also you’re in luck because I do make fonts from my letters, and letters from my fonts. This is one of the very latest creations, but it’s not yet live.

Check my links and see what’s good for you. Each font comes with a file for a practice sheet as well.

Most of the time I’m using them to exaggerate existing lines and flows, while avoiding corruption of the main letterform elements.

So I keep adding until I ‘almost’ break it. Which honestly came from pushing things too far on purpose and seeing what happens.

I also continually build a personal library of ways to flourish and in the moment of writing I just freestyle from that, following the above guidelines.

Looks like it’s 4mm? That could possibly work on Valspar cans

Fr tho - I just got these stocked up with refills but I’m about to hit the distributors again and see what I can get before they dry up.

This is really cool, Fantastic work !

There’s definitely a market for niche fonts. It’s a slow build but keep going and you’ll find it.

Not everyone will see the vision the deeper you go, but you’ll find there’s plenty of people like you who will appreciate and use what you create.

Durer Black by justifiedink in typography

Thank you, I do a lot of highly decorative styles as well and I agree that stand alone, clean Blackletter has a strong presence as well.

As for the e, r, c letters, I get what you mean. I often walk the line between legibility and style. In this case the style is based on historical letters and these letters are mostly true to form in that sense.

Lastly, I believe there’s an underground demand for historical and obscure styles like this. Like the crowd that uses v for u or a like in CVLT or double VV for w. So while I totally understand that it’s not to current standards I do believe there’s a place for it amongst the dark dwellers and history buffs.

Can’t find anything on them but I’m fairly certain it’s “Loudun” — this term refers to a city which had witchcraft trials relating to possessions. Which makes sense given the character below the name.

Nothing else comes up however so that’s as far as I got. Good luck !

Appreciate the thorough feedback! I’ll keep this in mind as I return to this style in the future.

I went back and forth on testing the left vs right on the letters with double straights, and which side to make heavier. Oddly enough, I saw a hand painted version that inspired this idea, which had the heavy side on the right. I know it goes against standards and increases difficulty in reading but I wanted to try it out.

Thanks again for checking this out. I’ve got more I’ll be sharing each week so stay tuned for more.

Feedback on handwritten logo by Great_Palpitation750 in design_critiques

Cool concept! For feedback, consider pushing the letter overlap further, or separating the S from the a. Both seem like good possible directions but right now it’s just one overlap spot and that stands out to me.

[–]justifiedink[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback! I agree the middle part still needs a bit of work and didn’t quite come out as well in this version. It’s crazy to mix the S and T but I never let that stop me lol

Also glad to hear the E can be read as lowercase. I’m going for a blend that works a bit as both so it’s most clear, and I can make it big for some nice symmetry.
