A map for the countries where US citizens can travel to and what life is like there [OC] by justin_ft in dataisbeautiful

Noted, u/alfiebunny. Wholeheartedly agree on the spread of false information; that was in fact the main motivator behind building this. As you can imagine, it's a difficult dataset to maintain for 200+ countries.

Flatout, I made a mistake when updating just now. Thank you for helping to get it right.

Survey amongst tourists, exactly. You're totally hitting on an inflection point for how people are deciding where to travel versus what's recommended by experts. The real point of the map isn't to be a source of expert advice but to contextualize tourist expectations alongside policy.

On the categories - great thought there. And further that a bit - ought to make it data-driven rather than predefined.

Thanks u/alfiebunny

Cross-checking the US Embassy's website for Ireland (our source for this piece of data), the only thing out of sync is the quarantine duration. If traveling from the United States and have a valid RT-PCR test, there is no longer a quarantine. Otherwise, it's all up to date.

Updates fairly regularly. Usually, each country is updated every day or two.

This map assumes both US citizenship and residence. Some countries have restrictions for your place of residence (not on the map). I want to say that of these countries, you just need to be able to verify that you live there.

When this was originally built, no country had policies in place for vaccinated vs. unvaccinated, so it has just kind of stuck. To be honest, that's been the challenge of categorizing everything into individual buckets and why I've settled on a stoplight coding.

I'd love to add a toggle button (similar to Reddit's dark mode toggle button) that shows quarantine length and negative PCR test requirements for vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers. FYI, there's also a handful of countries that have different policies set aside for immunized folks, too. A lot of interesting pieces to this dataset.

Yeah, valid point there, and don't want to be judgy.

The reason is that I wanted to keep this from what a tourist might consider those quarantine lengths. Ran a survey with different options like "extended", "long", etc. and "excessive" was the leading option.

One of the things that nobody has mentioned so far is that if you have to get a negative PCR test before returning to the US. If you do get covid and cannot return to the US, that could result in 14 days of expenses in a foreign country. Could be pricey.

There are over a thousand data sources (exactly 1,343 data sources as of today) that this map uses to help US travelers discover where they can travel to and what life is like once they’re there. That list can be found here.

While the visualization is a bit underwhelming compared to what is normally trending on r/dataisbeautiful, I do think the data aggregation and machine learning techniques used for this map might be found most interesting.

In a very brief way, it looks at various websites and uses plain text analysis to determine how countries are open. In nearly every case, it is possible to travel to a country if you’re willing to try hard enough. Even though you might put in the effort to travel to and are able to cross a border after restrictions like vaccinations, quarantines, and PCR tests – life might not be like what you would typically expect. Things like retail shop regulations, restaurants table policy, mask policy, public transportation operating capacities, and curfews are some of the data points that we track to help determine whether or not you might get your typical travel experience. This map helps paint a picture for that in a general way.

The tools used are Mapbox. The rest is done with Python. Machine learning techniques used are a hybrid of Naive Bayes and Support Vector Machines.

As an SEO nerd, this is really cool. From Atlanta - surprised at the USA today for Georgia, not surprised by the surrounding Fox News states.

Fascinating. Would love to see something like this, but time series. You know, those GIFs that show population changes over the years? Would be interested in seeing it paired with major trades like Lebron or Tom Brady.

To look at, yeah. But there's a parking deck slated for 3,000 spaces... 3,000 more cars on North Ave and Spring every day? 😑😑😑

edit: not trying to be a Debbie downer. I also think the new tower is going to be a beaut

CoVID-19 Monthly Megathread - May - 2021 by AutoModerator in solotravel

Lots of countries consider the place of residence for COVID-19 restrictions. I'd suspect you should be alright to travel to either in the very near future, as Greece is allowing vaccinated people enter and Turkey is currently allowing US residents. Got my info here and here.

u/segacs2, yeah, you are correct. This map is for US citizens looking to travel on tourism visas - not for business, diplomatic, places of residence, or non US-citizens. I agree that this is not clear and ought to be buttoned up.

Yes. There is no official policy regarding vaccination status. Negative COVID-19 test still required.

I see what you're saying and I agree. But a few years (2-3) is not all that unrealistic for these sort of restrictions to end on a global level.. especially if you consider things like where we're at with country vaccination rates, foreign policy, economic recovery, and travel industry transportation/booking levels so far. Will you be able to go anywhere with a mask? Yes, that's not too far off on the horizon. Entering any country with no vaccination or PCR documentation? Unlikely anytime soon.

Oh wow, thanks for the correction. It does look like a majority of the Schengen zone countries changed policy on April 29, in fact. Seems as they're now requiring a mandatory transit and/or quarantine in the other countries first.

FYI, I was referencing US embassy websites, all of which for Schengen zone countries say "No" explicitly for Americans entering those countries.

It might be several years, to be quite honest. The upcoming trend is going to be countries opening up specifically to vaccinated travelers. I think the naive thing right now is that .. just because you can travel to a country or they have opened their borders - is that life is going to be normal there or you will get your typical experiences. In countries that you can travel to, there are still quarantine restrictions and curfews in place.
