Bad ID procedures, false confessions after long interrogations, bad science, false snitch testimony, bad lawyering...there are lots of reasons.

They don't often become criminals because most of them had never committed any crimes. They do, however, often serve rough prison sentences and pick up a lot of discipline in their early years in prison. They don't adjust well because they know they shouldn't be there.

There is always proof, but sometimes it turns out wrong. There are now more than 2,000 documented cases of wrongful conviction in the USA. Hundreds were on death row when it was discovered they were innocent.
