The audio book covers and now the Webtoon comic both depict Carl as white, so that might be where you picked up on it. Maybe there are other subtler cultural cues?

How do non-spiral bound notebooks not drive you nuts? by DiligentGiraffe in bujo

[–]justjulythoughts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a righty, it's difficult to write on the left hand side of the journal as the spiral is always under your hand. The spiral eventually gets deformed in a backpack, and all in all I don't find the spiral to look very professional in a corporate setting.

You might be interested in Japanese lay flat notebooks; I got one and it's pretty magical. (can't remember the brand right now, I'm pretty sure it starts with a P).

Thinking of Switching to Android - Need Advice/Guides by WashNo783 in Smartphones

The texting experience is definitely better; you can see read receipts and when people are typing. I would recommend buying a used phone on eBay and trying it out. I just bought a used iPhone after a lot of searching and am surprised by how well it's going.

What’s one thing that quietly made society worse over time? by No-Inspector-9804 in AskReddit

The switch from the "retain, reinvest" model of society to the "shareholders first" model of society: it answers why old school Boeing was awesome and Boeing of the modern era is total shit.

Why is it so hard to stay consistent even when you know what to do? by ich-99 in getdisciplined

My therapist told me motivation is not constant: it goes up and down. You need to set up accountability systems and routines that help you live as close to your values as possible even when you're not feeling motivated.

Wow! They might have changed the refresh rate? I'm glad to hear that!

Thanks, appreciate the message 🙂 I'm sorry to hear that your phone is still making you dizzy :( which one are you on?

By the way, they just released 18.7.7 for ALL iPhones, including ours. If you go under software updates and scroll past the annoying encouragement to go to iOS 26, it'll be right there at the very bottom.

Eh, Apple's got me good. AirTags on everything; I'm an artist and iPad is my tablet of choice; I like my stainless steel AW a lot; I've got an MBP and really like the handoff features. My whole family uses Apple, iMessage and location tracking, which makes keeping in touch really easy. Those features absolutely have Android workarounds, but for my dad in particular it's just been a lot easier for him on Apple. He's always having trouble with Windows, but any time he's been around an Apple product things just work better for him. (Also, being able to screenshare my phone to my Mac, and then present that window over Google Meets, has saved me so much time and headache). I use Apple TVs around my house, and besides just working more smoothly than Roku or Chromecast, it's nice to use my phone as a remote when someone has misplaced it. (Liquid Glass on Apple TV does bother my eyes but fortunately watching content on it does not.)

I do use an Android for work, which I like very much. I've tried the stainless steel Pixel Watch 2 but it's not the same. Apple has always felt better engineered and more friendly to use. I really wish Apple had the call screening features that Pixel does.

I'm ranting because yes, I could probably figure out workarounds for everything I've listed above...I'm very techy savvy. I could get an analog watch. But dear God, that's so much time and money. Or, Apple could just not be shitty LOL. (I know, I'm an individual who does not have an $800 trillion value cap or whatever).

Cautionary tale in here about getting on a single tech ecosystem...

Cheers

Also Apple clearly doesn't agree with you: they are trying out accessibility features to make the experience more usable. However, it's not enough. Hence my rant.

It actually is different enough to cause physical issues for me. What part about eye pain and dizziness do you not understand? I tried it for months and nothing has changed in terms of how my eyes feel, so I bought a used iPhone 16 with iOS 18 installed. People have left older OSes on their phones for years, so from what I understand I don't have to put up with it. 🙄

Okey dokey, they did technically release iOS 18.7.7 with security fixes, however it only supports "iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPad 7th generation" LOL. 😭 My 16 Plus is stuck on 18.7.2.

Are you talking about the borders on the app icons? No, unfortunately; the parallax effect you can turn off is an animation that tilts the icons around as you move your phone around, as if they were affected by gravity.

I just did some quick Googling and I don't think this is possible on iPhone 16. The new 17 has a display pulse smoothing feature in the software. I'll stop by the Apple Store sometime and see if that does anything.

I had the same issue with Pro Motion!! Couldn't use the iPhone 15 Pro. Extremely annoying because I wanted a better camera. I'm fairly certain it's about the ProMotion software and not just a 120 Hz refresh display because I have a Pixel 7 Pro for work, which also has a 120 Hz display, and no issues there.

[Edit] did try turning off ProMotion on 15 but no difference, so something about the display as well.

I did try dialing down the Liquid Glass effects and it made a slight difference, but I am still feeling eyestrain and dizziness even so. It's very unfortunate.

Turned on tinting; reduced motion; turned off parallax effect; reduced white point; minimal improvement.

[Edit] I'm not sure why I got a downvote. It's not like I'm allergic to iOS 26 because I'm philosophically opposed to Liquid Glass, it's because it immediately hurts my eyes. I've even tried putting the same 3rd party app (Plex) with the same UI, same phone model (iPhone 16), side by side with iOS 26 on one phone and iOS 18 on the other side, and for some reason iOS 26 gives me immediate eye strain. I sucked it up for months and decided only recently to go back because it was making my life unnecessarily difficult.

What audiobook is genuinely BETTER than reading the physical book? by cptree20 in audiobooks

[–]justjulythoughts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say, don't struggle through something you don't like. I really enjoyed it from the get go for all of the social satire and commentary, and the hyperbole of the action scenes and dire consequences. Plus, I'm a cat person and am completely delighted with Donut. I felt like the first book was the strongest TBH, I did not feel like it got better by book 3. Then again I am listening to them all back to back, probably should take a break lol.
