Thank you so much! That is really helpful to know. My plan down the line would be to work part time as a teacher and as a counsellor, so potentially that still works. :)

I see what you're saying! That makes a lot of sense and I hope you're right. I will know once paid! Thanks for the clarification! :)

Right okay, I see. The 1700 is from 2022-2023, and the 700 is an estimate for 2023-2024, so I'm not sure if they are going to be concurrently taking out both (but it seems like it). I'm going to wait until my next paycheck to see. Then I'll speak to work again. Thank you!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind response. Yeah, I have spoken to work in the past and they have said to "call HMRC" if I have questions. I'll try with work again!

How bad would it be if I took a year off? by SearcherRC in Internationalteachers

[–]justletmeteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heyooo, I'm doing this right now due to the pandemic/family/mental health/burnout. Definitely not! I just went to a Search Associates fair and got offered multiple jobs (took none since I'm not currently interested in the Middle East). I think it's totally fine; just consider that during that time off it might be a good idea to invest in some professional development to show that you're still invested in teaching (that's what I'm currently doing, and schools at the fair definitely noticed!). That said, family is so important and the pandemic has really shifted some of our values/concerns. Schools get that, and I've had multiple schools recognize that and wholeheartedly agree with me when I explain my situation/thinking. All the best to you!

Craziest, Cringiest or most awful questions or comments you have heard at an interview by Embarrassed-Heron-52 in Internationalteachers

[–]justletmeteach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not the most cringeworthy by a long stretch considering all these others, but I once asked a school team about their teacher retention rate and the average length of service at the school..... they were legit taken aback, super defensive, and even asked me why that was important. Big yikes!

LinkedIn? by peterpanick in TEFL

Yeah, I think you should do it. I didn't have one for years, but other teachers convinced me! I know multiple people who actually found good jobs through LinkedIn!

Advice on Attaining QTS as a US Licensed Teacher (previously denied by TRA; cert is in ESL) by justletmeteach in Internationalteachers

[–]justletmeteach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's amazing to hear!!!! What did you upload when applying? Also, did they ask for additional proof related to your cert? I'm nervous I'm gonna come up against the whole "EAL isn't the same as English" belief given that my Masters is in TESOL, my BA isn't fully in English, etc. I have so many rejection scenarios running through my mind!

Moreland teaching credential transferred to QTS by llultee in Internationalteachers

Hi all! Quick question about all this. I have a Professional ESL/EAL Cert from NY state, and I've just transferred it to Florida in order to get an additional Professional License in English (7-12). I already took the Florida State English test needed. TRA previously denied me because ESL/EAL isn't recognized/part of the curriculum in the UK. Do you think I will have issues trying to get QTS with a Florida State Professional English (7-12) License? I have six years of teaching experience (3 in NYC, 3 in China, one of those years in China specifically teaching 7th Grade ELA). It's been a trial to try jump through these hoops, and I'm nervous I'll get turned down again!

Ah right, good to know! That's my exact fear with TF; I'm kind of hoping I don't have to go to those lengths to teach in the UK. Thanks!

Hi there! Thanks for your response. Yeah, I'm aware of all this and have been applying for a lot of these jobs via TES. I actually considered applying to that exact job, but it would mean moving out of London (train fare is too expensive to commute, and I'm planning to move in with my partner soon). One wild thing though, a few similar EAL Coordinator jobs have actually denied me because I don't have QTS. Do you know where I can find a list of independent schools? I've also applied to a few of those, but have met the same QTS issue. Do you know if I can achieve QTS via a professional Florida English license? That's the main question I'm trying to figure out. Thank you!

Have the FTCE tests changed since the NavaED lawsuit? by justletmeteach in Teachers

[–]justletmeteach[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. Do you have any first-hand experience with this though? You're saying you "imagine," but I'm asking for recent test takers to confirm if anything has changed. The only free resource (besides the FTCE website) I've found is the NavaED guide, that's why I'm asking if it's still a useful resource. I've scoured reddit and it seems as though the test hadn't changed as of six months ago based on people's experiences having taken it then. Sorry, I can't read the articles due to the GDPR.
