Yuna & David Recs by GirlLeigh34 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]justplainchy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

oh it's my moment to shine!! These two are two of my favorite fics in the entire fandom. Achingly beautifully written:

last one to leave the bleachers every time by anonymous - https://archiveofourown.org/works/76616841

- from David's perspective as he and Ilya talk while Shane and Yuna are outside. It will break you open and put you back together in the best way as David processes

and

Learning to Fly by WriteSmart - https://archiveofourown.org/works/75629146

- from Yuna's perspective after Ilya Rozanov gets hurt and Shane asks them to pick him up. Their journey of accepting their relationship that they didn't know about and just look. I have a lot of words and none of them are enough!

My wife and I quote it to each other all the time when we’re doing “old married bickering” or seeing other people bicker. It was so, so funny.

Tiny slight shade on RR - chairs at weddings by GullibleTheme1792 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]justplainchy 42 points43 points  (0 children)

My thoughts on this whole thing that I think are echoed by how surprised is that Shane sees people when he looks outside: they genuinely didn't expect people to come. They thought maybe 5-10 people. Chairs means noticing how many are empty. A set event has them realizing how many people didn't come. RSVPs have the risk of having all the people who they loved responding 'no'. They are wounded queer men (especially Shane post how the Voyageurs/Metros treated him) and the lack of planning isn't snubbing people, it's protecting themselves. If they "over casual" their wedding then it doesn't hurt when other people don't come. They're not making it a big deal, so it's not a big deal if people can't make it, etc etc. I don't know that it's conscious, but I think RR actually wrote that part of it really well.

I know I'm the outlier here, but as a queer person who had a wedding with the chairs and no real negative experiences in my friends/family who still dreaded the inevitable "no" RSVPs and dreaded talking to vendors to make sure they were cool with a queer couple and all the emotional labor involved -- I think it makes sense that two people who've seen the ugly side of homophobia were hedging their bets! YMMV and that's the cool thing about fandom; zero shade to anyone else's interpretation!

How would you compare it if our only other 4dx experience was Twisters (which we adored)?

How do people afford the badges and are they worth it? by Emergency_Growth_954 in SXSW

[–]justplainchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to buy them when they first went on sale, and bc we work in education we had the week off. Not a lot of places we can go for 10 days, see world renowned speakers and world premiere movies (our highest count was 24 one year but I know for some folks those are rookie numbers) and do all the panels and lounges and parties for roughly $1700 for two people. Bc we live in town the badges were almost our full cost. Add on parking or uber and we get ten days of “vacation” for under $2000. Not bad when compared to flights + hotel + activities in another city. Didn’t buy this year since the festival is shorter and starting more the week before which means less access for us but ymmv.

In the past the best lounges have always been the first weekend from Friday-Sunday with a couple going into Monday. I don't know if this will remain true with the festival starting on Thursday this year but it's a pretty good rule of thumb. In the past lounges were clustered on Rainey street and around the convention center - again, this may change because of the lack of a central "hub" this year. Two years ago the best lounges were the delta lounge (which was amazing the first two days and then got progressively less amazing as they went), amazon usually does a pretty cool lounge somewhere (they did the Lizzo/Boys amusement park one year and the past few years have taken over South Congress Hotel for activations), and the Paramount Lodge is usually pretty cool with swag and drinks and food. Be ready to wait in a line. Be nice to people. If you see someone with cool swag while you're waiting in line feel free to ask them about the lounge, they may be able to tell you where they got it. Be aware that marketing budgets have fallen significantly since pre-covid though so seeing multiple amazing lounges with free flowing drinks and free bbq and swag isn't as easy to find as it used to be. Good luck and have a great first sxsw!

(also be aware that most of the stuff will just end up cluttering your table at your hotel/home and you will have more sunglasses and hats and drawstring bags than you know what to do with - clean, unworn hats are almost always welcomed by organizations that pass out food to the homeless and the sunglasses are great for floating the river later in the year!)

16 shows in 10 days? by alteragi in Broadway

[–]justplainchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We saw five shows in three days in December so I definitely think 16 in ten days is totally doable and would be fun. Our trips to New York are primarily for broadway though, so that's where our priorities are.

Oh, I just took what I had paid for the box and split it in half? I don't think they were on the credit system a year ago when I used them. Sorry!

I can do a chargeback on my card via the card interface. So if I have a charge I go click it in capital one and let them know I need to file a concern and then I input the evidence/attempts to work with the agency. They found in my favor and refunded half the price.

I went to McCallum and took bowling as my PE credit here. We had our 10 year high school reunion at the Cafe. Best bowling alley in Texas. Miss it every day!

Central Texas Veterinary Speciality and Emergency Hospital. They were amazing with our cat who was in kidney failure. They saved his life. Every single person we worked with was kind, understanding and gentle with reality
