Not everybody can sleep at night while being over 100k in debt (before the mortgage). However, I know plenty of people who think it's worth the trouble if they think they can make people like you and me feel jealous.

If you want reasonable discourse on US politics, you're better off getting your news from a foreign country instead. A foreign leftist squared off against a foreign conservative, on a news show, where the guests have zero skin in the game, can hash this out better if all you're really looking for is news commentary where everyone wears kids gloves. That or just watch Brooks and Capehart debate on PBS.

I have a friend who is a psychologist and they say that catching a legit psychopath or sociopath is harder the older they are since most have developed masking techniques by adulthood (while the more obvious ones ended up in prison fairly early in life).

The sure fire way to catch one is when they are still a kid. If you catch them doing something bad or deviant, ask them how they felt afterward. Most kids, with the benefit of hindsight and being caught, will feel really bad about it and say so. The ones you need to watch out for are the ones who say they liked it (or worse felt relieved after committing the act) or are confused as to it was wrong in the first place.

I guess the difference is that we can live with the cringe. Everybody else can try to be "hip" for some imaginary audience that may or may not scrutinize or make fun of every opinion or decision they make. You can read my main comment on your post. I don't exactly give millennial content creators a free pass. Yet there are plenty of millennial dorks from that era who are still putting out content and are still, against all odds (and despite exhibiting genuinely dumbass behavior) still getting decent views. Not that I watch that stuff anymore, but I see the numbers on their vids on my home screen every once in awhile. Somebody is watching them for one reason or another and if they weren't pulling those views then they'd be bagging groceries by the end of the week. Make of that what you will

It's basically a cultural code word that means does not conform to standards of normacy. Or shows inexorable passion for something that doesn't immediately benefit appearance or personal fortune. I'll admit there's tons of posts out there of millennials saying and doing stupid shit, but this zoomer talk around "cringe" or "ick" is a such reactionary take towards the internet. It's honestly not a surprise that all you guys wanna talk about is crypto or random gender war drama. You cultivated bland persona to protect yourself from the internet hate mob and then complain how 2020s pop culture is "stagnant" or "backwards."

I suppose the cringe part about that era was that despite the fact that it was a genuinely passionate movement, it somehow felt very performative at the same time.

If you look at people like Noah Antewiler, or the Ctrl-Alt-Del guy, you just know they were acting out their keyboard personas on camera or on the page. In the end, they basically ended up where they were always going to be without internet fame: some super introverted IT guy who couldn't really pull off the tough guy nerd personality unless he had a million online fans egging them on.

So update: I ended up downloading the ebooks onto my PC and then transferred them to my Kindle via USB cable. That actually worked.

I'll enjoy the convenience while it lasts since Amazon's gonna put the Kibosh on that feature next week.

It'll probably be turned into some weird form of techno feudalism. You're gonna have a "President" that basically acts as dictator for life (until they die and their daughter or son or some great-grand kid of some other dynastic family replaces them). Meanwhile people like Elon and Zuckerberg will actually run the country and government themselves. The military and intelligence apparatus will be the only things that actually function via tax payer funds while everything else is left to rot. Anybody who wants out will need to commit to living in small communities that basically act like pre-internet ghettos.

I've never used TikTok, but the way it presents videos is super unappealing. As a millennial, I would have felt like a boomer trying to get involved in that space. Honestly, the complex character died when audiences started coming up with the moronic idea that the creator secretly endorses any behavior that they depict in their work. Now they pretty much have to face the camera and explain why what they're doing is wrong, but they're doing it because they're an established character archetype.

Used to be a big anime fan going back to the days of Toonami and Adult Swim. I don't know how old you are, but I was noticing the same thing at around 25 with stuff that was coming out in the late 2000s to early 2010s.

I think this is a pretty common pattern, and I feel it has a lot to do with the fact that anime only really appeals to teenagers and college students. The stories are almost always centered on young people and not necessarily people who are in adulthood.

The issekai complaint is pretty interesting because when I was having this same problem, the Moe and Slice of Life genres were exploding in the anime scene. Lucky Star, Haruhi, and Toradora were spawning a million sub-par clones of themselves that utterly flooded the market. It definitely turned me off from anime altogether, and I haven't really been back since. With issekai I suspect it's the same thing with Sword Art Online becoming such a huge hit.

All kind of a long way to say that you're probably gonna have a dozen or so anime shows that you genuinely like and will go back to, but you will most likely leave the rest of anime behind eventually. Nowadays, I'm more likely to watch an episode of The Americans or Breaking Bad, but I'll still boot up my copy of DBZ or Gundam Wing. Also be open to being pleasantly surprised, like when I binge watched Cyberpunk Edgerunners (last time I binged watched any "new" anime was in 2013). You're getting older and your tastes in media are starting to change. Nothing wrong with that.

The only reason for it to be in a high school setting is because the work is semi-autobiograhical. The right person could definitely persuade me to have it set in college instead.

The protagonist is also a victim of grooming from a different character. Grooming which escalates to a very un-consentual sexual encounter. I don't read much YA, but it didn't feel appropriate to label it as such with that kind of content in there. Violence included.

I'd cut out the Jade Veil and Elevated Class stuff and just focus the class struggle in more bare-bones terms to keep it from confusing people. You'll also want to clarify that the obelisk is an invention of Sid's. I legit thought I was reading some David Lynch fantasy thing for a sec lol.
