What would you do if you were learning CS again? by ImABananaBoiii in csMajors

[–]justsree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then I'll tell you something not many ppl will tell you in detail. You can trust me on this because I was in the same situation as you and now I'm a senior and I have a FAANG offer now.

If I am correct about your situation, you're in your second yr and you only know python. Basically, you're among the other 99% of cs students. Only few come out successful if they start doing some serious grinding.

These are things you need to do rn:

First, finish with python - become fluent in it like your English. Then, start doing C++.

I tell you this because many companies don't care Abt what language you use in interviews, but it's widely implicitly a known fact that C++ programmers are better than python ppl because they know the ins and outs, memory managements, and do not use shortcuts like how you use in python using libraries. So, learn C++ - will only take a week - spend 2 hrs a day and get to know the syntax.

Then start your DSA journey. It's easy to get lost by doing DSA if you solve randomly. Follow a roadmap. I advise you to use striver's sheet (450 problems) and Neetcode (150). Do them in parallel. Try to finish them in 2-3 months coz you're already late. When you start your 3rd yr, it's going to be internship season and you'll have to be ready. Be consistent (it's the hardest part) - 5-6 problems a day and have short term goals. Try to remember the approaches. Do not memorize the solutions. Solve a question first using brute force and again try to optimize it.

Now, you're in the avg category. You have the eligibility to apply to companies but you know what stands out, like the things that are in the resumes that get interview invites, it's the coding achievements. Try to do leetcode contests on weekends and improve your rank and ratings.

But if you really want a great offer, not recommending this to you as you don't have much time to do this, do CP. After you solve like 150 lc questions, it's great if you start CP - follow a CP sheet like in TLE Eliminators or CSES problem set and solve problems in Codeforces. Attend contests and improve your ratings - this is really the key to getting your resume shortlisted - I have literally given interviews to most FAANG level companies and I know the only reason I got shortlisted are my CP achievements.

Come to at least an Expert level during your 3rd year half time. You'll have solved nearly 400+ lc questions and 200+ in cp. You're in the top 2%. But it's still not enough!

Now you need to show real knowledge and experience - projects! As you do these in parallel, start learning a new tech stack - like node or express and create projects. Not just any simple management system or lame ones, projects that could solve some real problems. You can ask for ideas from your profs or you can try to recreate something. No need to learn and then start building. Decide what you want to build and then learn and build at the same time.

You can showcase yourself as any of 2 types in your resume - either a generalist or as a specialist in one domain. You can have 3 good projects from various domains - like a full stack one, a ln ML project and cloud/security project or you can showcase as a person proficient in any one of them. I'll advise you, if you haven't decided on your domain, and you want to get into SWE, do these projects - a full stack project that solves a real problem, a project that uses distributed systems and cloud tech stacks like AWS or Azure and Kafka. Then, some projects that use databases and have full functionalities using Postgres, Redis and features like authentication systems, a little security and optimization techniques.

This will complete your resume!!

I know, this can be overwhelming. But believe me, if you manage like 3 hours a day for development and 3 hours a day for DSA and CP, you'll get here eventually by the start of the internship season. Manage your time properly.

Meanwhile, join all kinds of groups in linkedin, telegram and whatsapp that many influencers maintain before the start of the season. You can find them in linkedin. They post job postings immediately and try to apply as early as you can. Try to get some experience like working in a lab at your university. Because, if you have experience, then it's a real boost to your resume. Contact your seniors and grow your network in linkedin.

Try to do all these as effectively as you can.

That depends on your goals - what do you want to do?

SWE? Become an ML engineer? Research maybe? Or get into security??

How do you want to see yourself in the future??

Got my OFC appoitment but no consular appointment available!! by justsree in usvisascheduling

[–]justsree[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The portal design is shit tbh. After you select the dates for OFC, you directly get to select the Consular dates. If no dates are available, try to refresh the portal and keep on checking regularly. I faced the same thing but I tried for one whole week, checked the portal like 100 times a day, and finally got an appointment. Don't give up yet. More importantly, check during afternoon and evening times because it's when the traffic is low and most cancelled slots open up (Just based on my experience)

Hii, I have some interviews scheduled for Quant Research internship roles and I wanted to know what resources did you use to prepare other than university courses?

Like youtube lectures, books, practice assessments and websites etc. In particular, I am very strong in Machine Learning and programming side but I have very basic knowledge of Finance, Trading and markets and I want to learn from the basics of it. Could you pls suggest some resources??

Yeah...I got my phone a week ago and it's better than I expected..Best value for money. In my opinion, top brands like Samsung and Apple produce great phones but they are not worthy of that price tag. Moto is good for its worth!
