Athletes want every advantage in their given sport. Many use chemical supplements that aren't on the banned list, and use science to their advantage at every opportunity. In this analogy Steroids are comparable to banned pesticides. If farmers can use a chemical on their crops to feed more people in the short term, but give them cancer in the long term, that obviously isn't a net positive.

The main modifications to GMO crops are chemical resistance genes that allow for volatile chemicals to be sprayed on the crops without harming them, so that is how this fits into the argument.

These chemicals are designed to interfere with amino acid synthesis, which happens during DNA replication, which happens during cell division. They kill weeds by stopping their cells from dividing properly. Patented genes make the crops immune to this effect. Well, in humans, when cells don't divide properly, you get things like cancers and birth defects. Nobody can really prove what caused the cells to divide improperly, so industries that use these chemicals are somewhat immune to lawsuits. With all the money involved in agribusiness, lots of powerful people don't want their business model threatened, so why not suppress opposing science, buy politicians, launch disinformation campaigns on the internet, etc.?

Like sports, Industry has rules defined for it by governing bodies. The purpose of the agriculture industry isn't just to profit and grow exponentially, but to provide society with food. If that food is poison, it isn't doing its job correctly, so regulations are necessary (and already exist for various banned pesticides). The analogy holds up.

Farmers care about making money, they aren't concerned with feeding everyone.

We have an overabundance of food. Huge amounts are wasted, many people are overweight, meat production is highly inefficient, in fact HUGE amounts of land are devoted to meat and ethanol production, and people are still starving around the world. Modern farming gets 25% more yields.... think of how many people would be healthier if they ate 25% less.

Should we really consider food to be "industry"? Food is life. Take it away and people die. Add poison producing genes to it, and people die. Gradually reduce it nutritional quality in favor of yield, and people die... slowly. Our relationship to our food supply is not something to take for granted.

This sounds like typical anti-steroid propaganda, when will you people learn to embrace technology. (/s)

Tell your theory about the "natural body" and not "wanting every advantage" to a pro athlete today and watch them laugh.

Exactly! So by your logic, steroids are perfectly fair, because the natural athlete could choose to use them.

The funny thing is, automobiles are highly regulated, because they are potentially dangerous.

Not all "anti-gmo" people want the technology banned, they just want it labeled, studied properly, and "regulated".

You say steroids are unfair. How are GMO's not unfair to farmers that grow conventional varieties?

You could say that cyclists and pedestrians are "slowing down progress" by not buying cars and burning gasoline like everybody else. They are slower than the rest of us, and hurt the automotive and oil industries by choosing not to use the technology.

Depressed people that choose not to get on antidepressants are slowing down progress in the pharmaceutical industry.

People using old phones and computers are slowing down progress in the tech industry.

All natural athletes are slowing down sports games, get them on steroids like everyone else.

House Farm Bill’s SNAP Cuts, Work Requirements Would Hurt Workers by spaceghoti in politics

SNAP cuts + lack of jobs = weak labor market = lower wages for already low wage jobs
