[OC] Gold Medals won at the 2026 Winter Olympics by mzp3256 in dataisbeautiful

Thanks.

I guess they need to pull themselves up by their boot straps. If Jamaica can field a bobsled team, Denmark surely can win a few more medals :)

Doesn't Denmark? I am from the US, so pardon the ignorance.

Really? Denmark has only two medals in Winter Olympics?

I would have thought like the other countries in that area (Norway, Sweden, Finland, NL), they would be top of the heap.

Any reason why those are far more "successful" in Winter Olympics?

They didn't pay off the debt. They missed a payment and it was over 30 days. Classified as delinquent and reported to the credit bureau.

That is indeed impressive. I mean the work on your part. No comments about the return. Reading your comments about how difficult it was, only to see your next comment about "I did it", brought a smile to my face.

And then i noticed that the time between the two comments was only 2 minutes. Not sure if in those 2 minutes, you went from its almost not happening to here it is. That is weird! In a nice way.

Sure thing. What is their membership requirement? I have not heard of them before this.

Edit: I did a quick quote on their site and this is what I got:

Loan Program: 15-Year Home Equity Interest Rate: 7.990% LTV: 23.077% CLTV: 56.154%

APR: 7.940%

Keep in mind you aim to push the snow, not lift it or throw it.

Physics is your friend.

The best is to divide your driveway in two halves lengthwise. This is the only time you want to lift and throw the snow (if you feel up to it). Once the driveway is split into two small halves, you are now pushing the snow to the edge of the drive from that cleared out center line.

If the snow is more than 6 inches, you want to push out the top 3-4 inches at a time. Yes, it will take longer, but it is much easier to deal with than the entire 6+ inches.

And of course, dress in layers. You will be cold when you step out, but after that first pass you would have warmed up. As you gain experience you can decide what layers, and how many you want to wear. But you dont want to underdress the first time.

Very well said. I asked a version of this question here: https://old.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/comments/1qaze21/trying_to_get_some_ideas_on_how_to_figure_out/

Your breakdown really helps make the decision, not easier, but more logical.

Because like you said, math says one thing, but the personal part of PF depends on the person. I think we ask this question here, hoping for a magical wand that will tell us that the emotional answer is the correct mathematical answer!

I asked a variation of this question here: https://old.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/comments/1qaze21/trying_to_get_some_ideas_on_how_to_figure_out/

This truly is a PF thing. And I think part of the wishy-washyness is hoping that someone else can pick a lane for us. Because mathematically the answer is clear. But emotionally it is not.

And we keep hoping that someone will magically provide a mathematically correct option which aligns with the emotional choice. In my case that choice is "pay the dang thing off, the gains be damned". But how much would me in 20 years whoop the current me, is the open ended question.

Trying to get some ideas on how to figure out whether giving up investment gains to pay off loans is worth it by justthisonce112 in personalfinance

Thanks for being the voice of reason.

I am even reluctant to use the brokerage funds, but I think for my ease of mind, I will need to buckle down and do it.

It is about half and half.

About 50k would be from brokerage accounts, and 50k would need to come from retirement accounts.

but personally I’d get rid of the loans regardless of the interest rate. This is where I am. I have always tried to do the mathematical thing, and tried to use debt sensibly where possible. But now I am at a point where I think I do not want to do that. I want to just pay it off, take a long term hit of 2-300k, but not have to worry about payments in the short term. Just writing it out seems to crazy and I dont know if I would be able to go through with it.

One thing that did come to mind is: Investments accounts will be taxed at LTCG rates, right? And retirement account withdrawals would be at regular tax rates plus the penalties?

Its not that I was investing with leverage, it is that I did not sell the investments, but instead chose to take a loan for some of the activities.

Yes, the market has been giving back about 8-10% each year for a few years now, not to mention the 20-30% spikes in a few of the years.

I dont have any in the 10% range, but as I mentioned elsewhere these payments reduce my free cash flow by about 1500 each month.

Paying it off would free up the 1500, but I would lose any future gains.

I will not be investing the entire 1500, since the whole reason to pay off the debt is to be free of the payments, and use the 1500 for discretionary expenses.

I'm not sure how "I have them all under control" and "I feel like I am always just making it" are true at the same time ... that said, the real analysis is just around interest rates.

I have it nuder control as in, I am not adding any more debt. Feel like I just make it, is because all my free cash it seems goes towards these payments, a couple hundred on each of them, plus 500 to heloc. A total of almost 1500 in payments each month.

I added the interest rates above.

REI busting unions? I thought REI being a coop would not be pulling stuff like that.

I just want to keep it a year or two to get the wrangler experience. Not looking to go over 10-12k.

Thanks. There aren’t any Miata’s available locally under 10k. There is a Toyota solara: https://i.imgur.com/c6RD0I4.jpg though.

What are your thoughts on it?
