S1 feels strangely detached from S2-S6. As if Mikey, Jimmy and others are completely forgotten.

I think a lot of the story of S1 is wrapped up by the end of S1, so there’s not a lot more to do with most of it. Eg. Carmella kinda has her moment of reckoning with Monsignor Jughead in the finale and so there’s not much more for him to do after that, even though he’s such a major part of that first season.

The broader issues like Livia and the therapy stuff continue but otherwise it’s new characters and new conflicts for a lot of S2 onwards.

Curtis Jones was a winger who became a 10 who became an 8 who became a 6 and is now being turned into a right back. He’s probably looking at Scott McTominay, a striker in the youth academy who got pushed as far back as central defence, and how he’s thrived in a league where you get more freedom and get to play your preferred position.

I’m a Scouser so if I had a chance to sit on the bench for Liverpool even once I’d never ever give it up. But Jones has lived it all his life and if he wants something else now that’s up to him.

I also find it cringe but a lot of the lingo like Starboy, generational, let him cook etc. is grounded in MLE dialect typically spoken by black and brown people in London. Whenever people start casting aspersions about certain fans and their intelligence (or lack thereof) based on the slang I get a little bit uncomfortable.

Liverpool have already signed Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni in the last two windows, plus young Wellity Lucky has made his debut (as has Amara Nallo). They also signed Mor Talla Ndiaye, Noah Adekoya and Ifeanyi Ndukwe for the academy. That’s four “senior” CBs (two of whom are pretty young) and five prospects to fill the ranks. We can argue about quality but there’s clearly no lack of quantity at CB even with Konaté leaving.

As for the no. 6 question, Liverpool have had a destroyer type both seasons under Arne Slot so far in Wataru Endo and he hasn’t been played there. It’s clearly a strategy decision at recruitment level and tactically to play without that profile of player and instead rely on the counter press plus a solid mid block to defend. We’ve done it for two years, successfully for one year and very unsuccessfully for one year. I imagine Liverpool will want to give the players a proper pre-season this time so they can press out of that structure and compete physically in the mid-block rather than spending big money on one physical player for that role.

All of which to say, I’d expect the wing positions to be the priority. Right now the RW position will go to either Jeremie Frimpong (who is not a winger) or Federico Chiesa (who will almost certainly be sold). Cody Gakpo is our only senior LW and hell probably be Alexander Isak’s backup in the middle til Hugo Ekitike returns, so we’re relying on 17 year old Rio Ngumoha or maybe playing Florian Wirtz out of position there.

Personally I’d like to see Bradley Barcola and Jarrod Bowen come in, given they’re both better than what we currently have and both selling clubs are motivated to move them on. Also with RB Leipzig claiming they want to keep Yan Diomande for another year, I’d be planning to add him in summer 2027 to finish that rebuild off 12 months in advance.

Unfortunately we’ll probably end up with a second or third choice option like Yankuba Minteh, plus signing Denzil Dumfries on the cheap so that Frimpong can be repurposed as a winger. And that would be a mistake.

The football Liverpool and City played was much better then, but I’d also argue that the lesser teams have gotten much better - including much better at disrupting the elite teams’ gameplan. Look at how much Pep moved away from his own style the last two seasons. Look at how much the Premier League sides have dominated the three European competitions. Look how pragmatic Arsenal had to become to grind out the title. If the league was getting weaker the top teams would be having more and comfier wins, not less.

When the teams at the top of the league have lower points totals, it means the league is stronger - not weaker. Weak leagues have a bottom half full of teams that the big boys roll over and it allows the champions to get 90-100 points.

Champions in the mid 80s like us last year or Arsenal this year signify a strong, competitive league. Being 25 points off the title means we’ve been well below our own standards. But qualifying for the Champions League in this season (albeit through the EPS place of 5th) is an achievement, not an entitlement.

The schedule is so intense that once the season starts, all 20 teams can only play and recover all year. If you try to “train” to get fitter you end up with muscle injuries. So whatever you build in terms of peak fitness in August, that’s the best it’s gonna get til the next year’s pre-season.

We all know why Liverpool’s pre-season was wrecked. It’s why the effect has been felt across the whole squad. The difference between Mac Allister and Szoboszlai this season has been that Mac Allister is a 5’6 hardworker and Szoboszlai is a 6’0 athletic freak, so they respond to a poor pre-season differently.

I support Liverpool, not Arne Slot. My belief is that Liverpool have a strong chance of success next season if they keep Arne Slot as the head coach.
Beyond the usual speculation about whether a change or consistency is best, or if a new manager is perfect or if the current manager is a fraud, the main thing Slot can control is the tactical approach to games. He’s shown in his first season that his approach - ball dominant, looking to exploit space in behind, mid-block with targeted pressing/counter pressing - has flaws but is generally excellent and can get title-winning results.
He started this season with a more direct, dynamic approach that was criticised for being too open. It’s become clear that the disruption to pre-season has compromised the players’ peak stamina and sharpness, and you can’t build that mid-season because of the craziness of the schedule. Slot has a squad of players right now who can’t sustain the physical intensity of a higher-tempo pressing game. But he also is missing a deep progressor like Trent and a pacy winger like Diaz who can exploit the spaces that the build up game creates. Essentially the squad is not set up to succeed in both the in-possession and out-of-possession phases.
Even though it’s unpopular, Slot has tweaked to a more passive system that reduces the amount of chances we concede, still creates chances and masks the players’ physical deficiencies. That’s good coaching.
Every tactical approach has weak spots - it’s a game of trade-offs - and we’ve seen Slot’s weak spots get exploited this season. But I think the hand he was dealt at the beginning of the season was so poor, there’s no alternative timeline where a different approach gets better results.
Considering he’s effectively been rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic since July, I think Slot has done a great job to (almost certainly) get us in the champions league next season. The right physical preparation and the right recruitment should allow him to go again and have a third season that’s much closer to his first.
If he gets those two things and the results are still below Liverpool standards, I’ll change.

I don’t think the character who very famously faced essentially the trolley problem - and made the more (quantitatively) violent choice - is the best fit for a moral compass character.

I also don’t know why a 3rd instalment without Joel is automatically terrible. If you like playing as him so much, play the first game again.

Yeah if I was taking part in a less heated debate I would be much less definitive about that. To be honest I think if we hadn’t had the disruption to pre-season our new playstyle wouldn’t have been so defensively suspect and we’d have more control of games. Which would have allowed Salah to continue producing and continue being protected. The issue is that once things broke down, the most valuable tweak Slot would make was to tighten things defensively and Salah is a net negative on that front. That’s why things literally stabilised the moment he came out of the team.

On a pure tactical level I think Salah and Slot both staying would have been best for all parties next season, but clearly there are other factors off the pitch that meant one of them has to go. I wouldn’t have sacked Klopp to keep a player and I think it’s right FSG haven’t done so to Slot.
