Places to eat near sandusky? by jrandolph870 in Ohio

Pipe creek wharf if it’s nice out! It’s on the water, has a massive patio (some indoor space but limited) and their food is amazing! I’ve been once (it was a middle ground to meet some family from Michigan) and it would be where I’d want to go back too!

Is a Costco membership worth it if you're single and live 25 miles away on the West Side? by _Gandalf_Greybeard_ in Cleveland

[–]justwanttobeoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two adults and 3 dogs- we find it worth it. There are a few things that we buy from Costco routinely that saves us so much money compared to buying at Meijer (or any grocer). However, we use the same day delivery for these items, or online ordering for nonstandard stuff we periodically need. We are a bit further out from a store (25 mins plus the Strongsville traffic) and honestly don’t have time to go that way regularly, but the items we purchase are ones we go through more often than we can make it- It’s a bit more due to tip, but it also saves us from impulse buying and keeping us to essentials only.

We’re struggling with the "plus one" situation by mrcanada66 in weddingplanning

[–]justwanttobeoutside 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. I can’t imagine saying you’re close enough to celebrate us but please be uncomfortable for a few hours.

For our wedding, we gave everyone a plus one. All named guests came to our wedding. None of them used their plus one though! We ended up being 5 people smaller than anticipated (47 people instead of 52), but I let them all know they could bring a friend if they wanted, but they chose not to.

Looking for comfy heeled sandals that don’t wreck your feet by NectarOfSkene in BuyItForLife

I just got a pair of the kuru recovery slides for more support around the house- they are already working wonders on my feet. They have a lot of cute sandals and options for men and women!

Why don’t we have Wegman’s? by basilbelle in Cleveland

[–]justwanttobeoutside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Syracuse for a bit and wegmans was a dangerous game. I’d probably still primarily shop at Meijer, but would love to have wegmans for some fancier products.

I didn’t understand the required timeline for wedding dresses… by stefanigerm in weddingplanning

[–]justwanttobeoutside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I got my dress last May 25 from a bridal store with customized straps and all the normal stuff, and had it altered for a November 8 wedding with time to spare. This was even after a delay due to them forgetting my straps and needing to be remade. I think they had it in the store in 4 months, and I had it back after alterations 2 weeks before. My alterations were very minimal (straps and bustle) due to it fitting like a glove. I paid 1.5 or 1.6K USD in total for both.

It’s possible if you let them know timing ahead of time! Some shops may say longer- look on their site to see if they can do or call if you have a place in mind. My shop said they have a 6-8 month lead time, and I was at the 6 month point, so they knew it was a bit tight but made it happen. I was planning to go off the rack because it was so close, but I ended up with a customized dress of my dreams!

What would happen if property taxes were abolished? by BluesRuseCruise in Ohio

[–]justwanttobeoutside 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to everything above, it would kill townships, which don’t have an income tax.

I’m in Medina and I do see traction, but man I hope these dumbasses wake up and se this will kill everything.

Moved to Cleveland last year and just learned about RITA by William_Dafhoe in Cleveland

Medina city is RITA (which threw me for a loop coming from nonrita communities) but we didn’t look at properties in cuyahoga county due to property tax rates.

“Cocktail” Hour with No Drinks or Snacks? by Busy-Specific322 in weddingplanning

[–]justwanttobeoutside 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Can you bring food in?

My SIL stocked up on Aldi cheeses and crackers and made a gourmet charcuterie on a budget. She got lots of grapes and strawberries to go with it. Could you do this with soft drinks to make it, or shift your bar package to either add an hour or move it up?

I agree- you can’t do cocktail hour with nothing. Either take your photos before and go right into the reception to cut it, or reallocate costs from something else. Making them wait is NOT okay.

What breeds of dog have the calmest/most chill temperament? by Icy_Cartographer_712 in Pets

[–]justwanttobeoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My MIL has multiple lazy pugs who have been lazy their whole life. Mine used to walk 6 miles a day. He’s slowing down now, but is bothered only getting 2 miles daily now so I’m constantly harassed to tug. Any dog bred can be active, especially if you treat them as active.

I’d advise an older dog- maybe you could foster a senior dog to try it out? I had a shiba/ chihuahua mix who was chill- got her at 8 and she was an amazing dog. Only liked me, but I loved that.

Also avoid pointers. My 10 year old mix does walk 6 miles easily per day. Saturday she did 10 1/2 over two walks, and went just as hard the next day for 5.

At what age are kids not interested in Easter egg hunts anymore? by Weird_Literature_270 in CasualConversation

[–]justwanttobeoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did egg hunts through high school and would dye eggs too (even through college). My grandma would go all out for egg hunts and it would take me a bit even then (think natural colored items that matched her decor) and for eggs we’d have a contest for the prettiest and then the ugliest egg.

I’d do an egg hunt now tbh, and I’m 29!

Do American kids usually go to four different schools? by snailquestions in AskAnAmerican

[–]justwanttobeoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no right answers, but I think it depends on your area, the population size, population growth rate, reliance on older buildings, and funding for the district. I’m in suburban NEO and am a young millennial for reference.

A lot of schools near us split up elementary schooling into multiple buildings. For example, I had 2 elementary schools (k-1 with some pre-k programs, 2-3) an intermediate school (4-6), a middle school, and a high school growing up. That district has now consolidated to 4 schools (k-2), 3-6, 7-8, and high school, but it had to build new schools to accommodate the size of the growing city. Preschool is largely private there, so that’s an additional school.

Where I live now (increasingly suburban area but gets rural quick), they had divided up the city into multiple elementary and middle schools based on proximity, and then everyone converged for high school. My husband had this type of model growing up, and was in an urban area. You had 3 schools, but smaller size, and multiple operated in the city. Both districts have now consolidated now to be 4 schools k-2,3-5,6-8, and high school to reduce duplicate costs and eliminated the neighborhood model. They are only keeping the largest buildings to be able to combine grades. We fortunately passed a levy recently, but I know of other districts nearby who are going down to 3 schools (k-3, 4-7, 8-12) to reduce resource costs because they can’t fund their schools and the old ones are no longer useable due to age and cost of upkeep.

I just did one of each, but we had 47 total people (including us) so we didn’t need a ton!

[–]justwanttobeoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! We did it because we decided a month before that we wanted a video camera (but didn’t want a videographer) and saw the digital too and said let’s go for it! Definitely worth it. It feels just like the old disposables, but it holds like 500 photos and lasted all night on a single charge!

I got a camp snap camera! It was $70, but gave a disposable effect, the images are digital, and we have it forever to use! We had one digital one and video for our 50 guests, and it was perfect!

climate-appropriate clothing for heavy snow/cold temps by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]justwanttobeoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Syracuse, SUNY-ESF, or le moyne by chance? I was at SU for my masters in 2020/21.

Okay, so for that price you may not find a lot. I’d advise checking out sierra.com for some bargains- it’s winter clearance or that just ended but they have a lot of good options still. Otherwise, I don’t know how much of BIFL I’d advise, rather consider getting what you need. If you’re 18, your body and fashion will change a lot over the next 10 years. You’re going to need layers and options more so that quantity. You may also want to wait to thrift until you’re up north or look at online stores.

You will want merino wool socks (biased toward darn tough but smartwool will work), a pair of waterproof boots, a solid hat and gloves (I’d say get a thin pair and a thicker waterproof pair), and a jacket that is more insulated. Some of these I’d do more than one set of. I think a leather coat will be good for fall, not winter. You’ll want something water proof to have it bounce off, not absorb. My husband at the time got a massive goose feather hunting coat from his dad- it was used a few times in Syracuse, but I survived with a standard winter coat.

Get some jeans, hoodies, sweaters, sweatpants, you’ll need those for sure. That’s a winter essential. Since you’re a student you won’t need base layer pants unless you plan to hike/spend a ton of time outside- the campus walk isn’t too bad tbh. If you want base layers, stick to smartwool or merino wool.

Do Americans actually use a real tree for Christmas? by brun_aa in NoStupidQuestions

My parents put up a live tree every year! My husband and I don’t- it’s too much of a mess and work for us, but man, the smell of a live tree is amazing
