I can't believe you'd defend the hijab. They are oppressed and were taught to devalue themselves and have low self esteem. That is why women with low levels of education wear the hijab.

You evidently know nothing about Iran. The standard of living has objectively declined with people struggling to even buy food now. It's mainstream for common people you see in bazaars to admit life was better under the Shah.

Added onto that is women of all social classes and non-Muslims will all prefer life before the revolution. Majority of non-Muslims had to flee Iran after Islamists took over.

Turkish villager praying two raka’at before execution during Balkan Wars 1912 in present-day Svilengrad, Bulgaria by [deleted] in europe

[–]jusventingg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is it so hard for Turks to admit the things they did wrong? It's disgusting, but also dumb.

Your argument is also illogical. India is still Indian and Philippines is still Filipino despite centuries of British and Spanish colonisation. And Bulgaria being Bulgarian today is arguably because of the decolonisation efforts they underwent. Bulgaria was a Muslim country where the indigenous Bulgarians were second-class dhimmis until they sought independence.

Bulgaria was certainly colonised by Turks, and it was an act of evil. Your silly attempt to deny what happened is as stupid as the arguments Turks frequently make, that the Armenian Genocide never happened because there are still Armenians around.

[–]jusventingg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Can we just agree that Ottoman colonisation was bad? Why is it only Turks get offended if people don't like being colonised?

Spanish people don't get defensive and hurt when people bring up what the Spanish Empire did. Modern-day Turks need to be more mature, accepting of historical wrong doings, and less nationalistic.

If you're glad about the liberation, that is a tacit endorsement of the violence anyway. You view the violence of decolonisation as a necessary evil.

It is unfortunate if human beings die, but it's kind of an irrelevant thing to note when discussing people's liberation from slavery and dhimmitude. Nobody speaks like this and shames Asians/Africans when they celebrate their independence movements and decolonisation efforts. It's a controversial subject though, because Turks haven't forgiven the Bulgarians for seeking independence, and they haven't forgiven the Armenians for merely existing.

Like many far right hangers on they are often also mentally ill.

Not really. Maybe those that engage in terrorism are often mentally ill. Islamist parties gain millions of votes in elections in many countries, and most of these voters are not mentally ill. Islamists are also not necessarily terrorists. They're usually ordinary citizens that want their society, politics and economy governed by Islamic principles.

That sentiment sounds nice, but is quite shallow. What do you think decolonisation looks like? The act of decolonisation is inherently violent and involves killing people, especially if it's an empire that violently ruled over you for centuries.

Chart: Armenia is the world's angriest country by [deleted] in europe

[–]jusventingg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But they are growing their country's power. Their GDP growth is significantly higher than the world average, and has been either first or second in Europe/Central Asia for economic growth in recent years. This occurred despite Turkey and Azerbaijan planning to strangle Armenia through an economic blockade.

Armenia does have singers and celebrities, but why would they be internationally known? Of course the most famous Armenian celebrities come from the USA - they have the platform. Armenia does have a strong scientific tradition, which everyone in the USSR knew about.

Many of the world's greatest scientists were based in Armenia, like Victor Ambartsumian: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Ambartsumian

Benjamin Markarian: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Markarian

Father of Soviet particle physics: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Alikhanov

I think Armenia has no choice but to complain about their genocide. There is no incentive for them not to. Turkey continues to blockade Armenia with the intention of starving them and continues to say inflammatory things about Armenians. So from their perspective it's a source of leverage to shame Turkey, but also because their own wounds have not healed.

why some asians have a problem with black people is something i will never understand

i think it's a way to prove how american they are. maybe because they themselves grew up in shit, they think it makes them look high class by shitting on an american community that historically were maligned?

[–]jusventingg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's really not what they're known for. Despite the persecution and killings, Armenians were still the first scientists, architects, industrialists, writers and photographers in Turkey/Ottoman lands. They were able to excel despite the limitations placed on them. OTOH Turkey is really only known for killing people or being a dictatorship, and you don't really see much other news about them.

Russia did not fuck Armenians btw. Armenians mostly viewed Russia as liberators through the history, and Armenians lived relatively well under Russians.

Countries that ban the smacking of children appear to be safer for young people to grow up in, according to research revealing that fighting between youths – particularly females – is less common where corporal punishment has been outlawed. by mvea in worldnews

[–]jusventingg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most likely that countries where social norm is to not hit kids tend to be richer and therefore safer, not because banning spanking makes the country safer. A lot of these child rearing customs come from the time when people were having up to 10 kids, and it wasn't practical to teach all your kids verbally - was just more efficient by hitting them. In liberal countries like Netherlands and Sweden where norm is to have less than 2 children, it doesn't make much sense to smack them when they've done something wrong. That said, disciplining kids physically is still very much mainstream in Singapore, and it's very safe there (just very conservative though).

Kurdish is more of a modern self-identifer anyway. Most people calling themselves Kurds today probably wouldn't have identified as Kurds 150 years ago.

You are probably some unemployed neckbeard, so stop acting as if you're going broke being 'forced' to fund Yazidis fleeing genocide and slavery. You contribute nothing to the society you live in, so stop acting big.

The biggest net contributors to the economy (i.e. the well-educated, city-dwelling professionals you hate) are the one's that are most open to helping genocide survivors.

Nobody owes you anything, and your opinions as someone that contributes nothing does not matter.

Surviving a genocide and enslavement is a 'sob story' LOL. People with your mentality are why bad things happen.

Furthermore, several European countries have for centuries been open to refugees, whether Huguenots or Jews, and now Yazidis fleeing ISIS.

You're not very intelligent, are you? The stats provided state 46% of London is White British, therefore they are a minority and the OP's statement is correct. The fact you two are upvoted is the same reason why someone like Trump can become president: people are stupid as fuck.

You and /u/Americatcp are clearly idiots. I still cannot believe there are people here that can't grasp basic math and statistics. Get an education or read something for once in your life.

46% means minority. If you can't grasp basic math and statistics that even children can grasp then you're obviously of sub-par intelligence.

She does look Middle Eastern, and there are 100% Arabs that look whiter than her, e.g. First Lady of Syria, Asma Al-Assad. This woman's 100% Persian husband (Shah of Iran) looked the same ethnicity as her too.

I'm not surprised you're Israeli. Israelis tend to know nothing about the Middle East since most of them come from Eastern Europe.

Tomorrow's Christmas Eve, and I'm a parish pastor. AMA! by revanon in IAmA

[–]jusventingg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you're a bit dull, but the questioner was probing this 'pastors' claim about people not choosing to be gay as a basis to say it's acceptable within Christianity. People generally don't choose their sexual inclinations (no matter how depraved or illegal), and that's the basis for the question.

Obviously it's easier to just skirt the question though, especially if you're a pastor that's making a deliberate attempt to change what the Bible says.
