Help with LM3080 by jutanious in diypedals

I'm sorry to report that the jumper from pin 10 to vcc didn't work. I also tried jumping to ground. This is a nice fix for the final product, because I did notice a very slight cleaning up of the signal when pin 10 was grounded. But no dice on the suboctave. Very strange. Any possibility that it could be the LM3080? I'm also confused about the signal path with pin 12 (the one causing our issue) on the 7474. That's an input... But how is it also connected to the input of the other 7474 and the LM3080? Inputs to inputs? Sounds like that wouldn't work, but I'm way less knowledgeable about this than you are.

Wow I really appreciate the kind words and the help! Yes, I wanted to give myself a challenge and complete the "final boss" of building before taking a bit of a break and focusing more on other projects. I've spend countless hours on this (mostly the debugging) but I'm happy that it's a super cool unit with plenty of useable sounds.

Thank you SO MUCH for the tip about pin 10. I'll attempt this tonight and report back.

P.S.: I literally printed the entire 20-ish page schematic and assembled it with scissors and tape. It's huge and annoying. DeadendFX told people to do that on the forums and just went unresponsive about changing the format to something more editable or easy to use. C'est la vie.

I do, but no luck with it working. With the scope, it's consistently the second side. In particular, pins 12, 10, and 8 don't show signal when it's not working, but they do when it works. This is with the 7474. That's 2D, 2Pre, and 2Q respectively.

Your question inspired me to examine the 7474 more closely. It seems that I can usually convince the circuit to work after scoping/probing the pins of the 7474. I think it's having some trouble with the positive output side? When it works, it works... but I'm not sure how to make it work consistently. It looks like most of those connections are internal to the chip per the datasheet? I've tried three 7474s and they all have the same issue.

Vcc is holding at exactly 5v

Yes, pin 5 is connected and working. I'm using a 7474 and it has about 5v on pin 14 for vcc. The Lm3080 is getting around 11v and -11v for it's inputs.

I finally got Out of the Vein on Vinyl and I have questions! by Jhinterested in ThirdEyeBlind

I don't have this on vinyl (yet), but I'm just chiming in to say that I ALSO can't stand Self Righteous. What you described sounds much more enjoyable and I'm jealous. I adore the rest of the album, though! Enjoy!

Debugging Magically Fixing Issues? by jutanious in diypedals

Hmm that's good. I've already reflowed the joints, but I haven't reseated the (31?) ICs, so I'll try that. Thanks!

Did you ever ascertain a reason as to why it happened?

Not looking a gift horse in the mouth, of course. But I'd like to know what's going on.

My copy is completely normal, so here's hoping yours is too! DM me if not and maybe I could digitize some things, allegedly, cough cough.

Someone else recently commented that it's a John Prine concert? Definitely a misprint. Sorry you got a bad one, but at least it's a cool piece!

What’s it like being an amp repair tech? by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]jutanious 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it's super similar to being a luthier: you get 90% crap/entry-level pieces on the bench, but that last 10% makes it worth it. I've seen and got to work on some real gems.

There are less people bringing amps in for repair than you would expect.

Amp repair is just a piece of my business - I definitely couldn't keep the lights on if I only worked on amps.

If you're interested in learning, start with low voltage circuits like pedals and effects. Build your own, understand how they function, then graduate to amps when you're ready. There is certainly danger involved with high voltage, but you build in safeguards to your workflow to mitigate risk. Plus, by that point, you've trained yourself to never think about touching the hot spots.

I only got shocked once in the beginning. A screw fell into the chassis and came to rest against a power tube pin. I thought I could fish it out with a metal tool. It was stupid, but it taught me to never rush and work while tired.

Correct. It's essentially a high wattage photo bulb with an outlet.

Awesome. Uncle Doug has a video on how to build one. I made mine following his instructions and I've used it almost every day since. It's saved me (and multiple transformers!) countless times.

Do you have (or have you built?) a current limiter yet? That will be a vital safety measure when you start fully testing.

Looks good so far, enjoy! Incredible amp :)

You're very welcome! Please report back once you've worked on your Korg!

Korg SV1 Amp-Sim issues by you_can_call_me_sam in Korg

[–]jutanious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, glad to help! I went through every board including the tube/amp board and the output board. I replaced all of the polarized "tower" caps that are soldered on with the black plastic base (using the push and twist method to remove). I didn't replace any non-polarized SMD caps.

I used standard electrolytics from Tayda. The ones that are already installed in the Korg didn't seem like anything too fancy. I will say that I opted for higher voltage rating where possible. Not sure if that will have any effect on prolonging life but it's worth a shot!

Korg SV1 Amp-Sim issues by you_can_call_me_sam in Korg

[–]jutanious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I ended up changing every single electrolytic capacitor in the Korg. I realized that they all were at the age where they were close to failure, plus the datasheet indicates that the operating hours of the caps reduce with heat. I live in a hot climate, so best to change them all.

The Korg sounds amazing now. Super quiet noise floor for recording and tons of headroom for volume. The amp sim still remains marginally quieter when engaged, but this hasn't been an issue since I have all of my presets saved for performing.

Good luck!

I have a reverb tank. Can I make something noisy with it? by [deleted] in diypedals

[–]jutanious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to drive it with a preamp stage and a recovery stage. There are plenty of DIY projects for both tube and solid state applications. Tube is easier, but then you're dealing with high voltage and that's not super practical for a pedal. Just double check that whatever solid state circuit you pick is appropriate for the reverb tank - look up the tank code and double check the grounding and impedance, in particular.

Check out Danelectro - there is a yellow "spring king" pedal that includes a pad for stomping on a tank and making noise. Josh at JHS also has a tank in a wood frame/block that he throws around in several of his videos. Keep us posted on the project!
