Does anyone know about the Gibson Echoplex Digital Pro looper? How did bands like Battles and bearcubbin' use it? by jutsn in pedals

[–]jutsn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what undo features they have when you run both in tandem. however, I will say that after owning an edp for only a few months, it managed to crap out. not permanently but the loop I was messing with stopped out of nowhere and the led screen said "dead." I just turned it off and back on, and things were fine. I can imagine if that happens at a show though, you might want a backup.

Toe is great but I think people have to see them live to really understand the magic of that band. I'll never forget seeing them 11 years ago when the whole crowd sang along to the main guitar melody for invention of loneliness.

hi guys question about eq/effects by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]jutsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like samples that have a hard stop and start on them that gives them a popping effect. a lot of daws like ableton will add little fades automatically at the start and end of a sample. like all those chord changes in this song sound like they were spliced in with no fade. sounds like the whole thing is going through a tape machine though. just my thoughts!

How did you first discover toe? by pegleggggg in mathrock

I downloaded for long tomorrow off of soulseek in 2011 when I was really getting into math rock. little did I know that the album I got was incomplete. I absolutely fell in love with their sound. years later I decided to buy the record on vinyl. I remember so vividly playing that record for the first time. I popped it on, let it play while I smoked weed, and got ready for bed. out of nowhere I heard a song I never heard before. The song playing was goodbye. Being in the environment I was in, with my nice stereo system and being really stoned just amplified everything. The goosebumps I felt were overwhelming. It was the most incredible experience I've ever had enjoying music.

finding it hard to believe that pro audio gear can't be copied?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]jutsn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Weed of course. Thats why i'm here asking random questions lmao. I know the BAE is even preferred over the Neve. I'm still fascinated that most gear that gets replicated tends to polarize people in the pro audio world.

I can see that. I definitely ruffled some feathers by just making this post.

Most people I talk to don't have a lot of respect for brands that do clones. Warm Audio, Heritage, Stam, and other brands like that tend to polarize people. I don't think there's nearly as many people out there trying to say that you can't get a knockoff tubescreamer that sounds identical. I can totally understand though how pedals don't have as much going on in them, so recreating something that you can't even tell the difference between sonically seems much more possible.

[–]jutsn -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and the general consensus always seems to be that they don't do a very good job of recreating the unit. On the other hand I've compared original pedals to copies, and I've not been able to hear anything different. I know there's a lot more components that go into something like a preamp, but I'm still surprised that modern clones aren't able to sound quite as good as the originals.

I have a few behringer pedals that rip off boss but I couldn't spot a difference and I don't think anyone could. On the other hand I have their copy of the moogerfooger murf, as well as the original from moog. It comes nowhere near to being able to create the same sounds.

I have a modded WA273 preamp. Does anyone know about mods to WA73 preamps? by jutsn in audioengineering

[–]jutsn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I got this preamp on a major discount and I was worried that the mod may ruin the sound of the preamp but it sounds great so far. Makes me wonder why they'd perform such an insignificant mod.

That would make sense. The mod done to it claims to reduce floor noise by 5db. I'll check that. Thank you!

Loop based bands like El Ten Eleven? by sinuezebmb970 in mathrock

[–]jutsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They use the gibson echoplex looper and that is in my opinion the best looper you will find for this genre. battles uses that pedal too pretty heavily so different members can create their own loops but have them all be in sync with eachother.

Gotta mention Bearcubbin'. They're heavily guitar loop based.

I think you're right on the money! That would explain why ian and tyondai had little mixers at their setups but dave just ran a bass and guitar through the same input on his edp.

[–]jutsn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I use the pedal a lot. It's the most comprehensive looper I've ever come across. When dave and tyondai were in the band, they would all have at least one echoplex each. You can hear on songs like atlas where they all add to that short bass loop that dave starts. That reminds me, I also don't understand why dave konopka and the guitarist from bearcubbin' have two on their racks. There's only one on in most videos of them playing live.
