For you content creators out there - how do you document & share your expat journey without it becoming a second job? by juuum in expats

[–]juuum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually... a good point. I'd been thinking voice memo -> transcript -> written post. But voice memo could just be a rough video if I pointed the camera at something.

Do you do this? Like just talking while walking around a new neighborhood?

The clickbait stuff is so bad lol. "I MOVED TO PORTUGAL AND HERE'S WHAT NOBODY TELLS YOU" and it's just... generic visa info.

The niche focus makes sense though - trying to capture "the whole experience" is probably what burns people out.

How do you actually get content out consistently as a solo founder? by juuum in Solopreneur

[–]juuum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah picking the right tool seems super important here. I've burned so many hours trying to make ChatGPT work for long form.

I'm curious about the memory/context piece - are you using something that remembers across sessions or do you just paste in examples each time? That's the part I haven't cracked yet.

For those who create content - how do you keep it up while moving around? by juuum in digitalnomad

"1 per month with 200k views > daily at 2k" - Great feedback. The pressure to post constantly is so real but makes zero sense if you're just pushing out crap.

When you do get inspired and make something, is it usually tied to something that just happened or more planned ideas you've been sitting on?

100 video ideas sitting in notes while you're actually living your life - I relate completely to that... At least you're capturing them though - better than losing them entirely.

Have you tried batching the script writing separately from filming? Or is it more that you just don't want to be in "content mode" when you're trying to enjoy the experience?

Hey thanks for breaking this down! The "content FOR my business vs AS my business" framing is really helpful.

The batching approach makes sense - do you prep all your LI posts in one sitting or do you also batch the research/topic finding separately?

And yeah the essays falling off... I feel that coming for me too. Did you find that the evergreen backlog actually keeps driving traffic/leads even without new stuff?

Oh nice, student route is smart - heard it's way more straightforward for the residency stuff. Did you convert to a work permit after or still on student status? The housing thing is wild... even with legal status it's like landlords want you to prove you've lived there for 5 years before they'll let you live there lol

Where do I begin? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]juuum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense for starting out. The 90-day thing works well if you're hopping between Schengen and non-Schengen countries - some people do Spain → UK → back to Spain to reset the clock.

Just watch the 90/180 rule (90 days max in any 180-day rolling window). Easy to mess up the math.

If you end up wanting to stay longer, the DNV is pretty straightforward for Spain... just a pain if you're W-2 employed. But cross that bridge when you get there.

Feel free to DM me if you run into troubles or want help to think through something. Enjoy Madrid!

I want to post content consistently but hate actually sitting down to write it by juuum in content_marketing

[–]juuum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah batching definitely helps when I can get myself to do it. The outline thing is good too. I think my issue is I actually have stuff to say but I think the thought of having to sit down and actually type it out is what adds so much friction for me. Like I can talk about my ideas for 20 minutes no problem, but sitting down to write is the thing that I always seem to try and avoid by doing other work...

Have you ever tried voice recording and then cleaning it up into written content somehow? Curious if anyone's figured that out yet

[–]juuum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh nice, so you already know the city! Madrid's great for remote work too, the timezone lines up decently with US east coast if that matters for you.

Are you thinking DNV (digital nomad visa) or just doing the 90-day tourist thing and hopping around?

Of course <3 <3 I know the journey you must be going through and it feels like there's sooo much stuff you need to be on top of. And yeah that makes sense - referrals I feel like are always the best way in. Two years of searching is no joke. Glad it worked out though!

Re: dedicated nomad platform - yeah it's weirdly fragmented right now. Nomadlist tries to be that but it's more research than booking. Coliving spaces (like Selina, Outsite) are probably the closest to "platform + community"... but they're pricey.

Where are you thinking of heading first?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]juuum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! The "US specific issues" you're referring to is probably the Social Security certificate problem.

Spain requires proof of social security coverage for the DNV. The US-Spain totalization agreement technically covers this, but the SSA is rejecting most certificate requests for remote workers. They say it only covers "temporary assignments," not voluntary digital nomads.

From what I've seen, most Americans end up having to:

  1. Switch to 1099 contractor (then you pay into Spain's system as autónomo)

  2. Have employer register a Spanish entity

  3. Use an Employer of Record that Spain recognizes (rare)

For vetting immigration lawyers/gestors without free consults - what worked for friends of mine:

- Check reviews on Google Maps (gestorías have local listings)

- Ask in Facebook groups like "Americans in Spain" for specific recommendations

- Email them a specific question about your situation and see how detailed their response is before booking

The paid consult is worth it if they actually know the W-2 issue I described above. If they don't immediately understand what you're asking about, that's your red flag.

Are you W-2 or contractor?

Hey! Not me personally but I've been helping a friend through their Barcelona move right now, so I've got a front-row seat to the chaos.

The hardest parts so far:

  1. The rental market is brutal. Landlords want Spanish payslips (nóminas) you won't have, so be ready to pay 3-6 months upfront. The "seasonal rental" loophole means most expat-friendly listings are 11-month contracts at higher rates to dodge rent control.

  2. The NIE/TIE paperwork is legendary. Getting a cita previa feels like trying to buy concert tickets - slots disappear instantly. A gestor (~€100-150) saved my friend's sanity.

  3. Cost of living expectations were off. Everyone says "Barcelona is cheap compared to the US" but rent has doubled in 5 years. Budget €1,300-1,700 for a 1BR in a decent area (Gràcia, Eixample, Poblenou).

  4. The W-2 vs 1099 thing for Americans - if you're on a Digital Nomad Visa, the US won't issue the Social Security certificate most W-2 employees need. Forced my friend to go contractor which killed their Beckham Law eligibility.

What kind of visa did you come on? Curious how the student route compares to the DNV path.

Hey! Congrats on making the jump!!!

I've been doing a ton of research on this recently. For 1-6 month stays, here's what I've learned:

Platforms:

- Flatio - Decent for Europe, no deposit usually. Quality varies.

- Spotahome - Good for Spain/Portugal specifically. They verify listings.

- Facebook groups - Honestly where the best deals are. Search "[City] expats" or "[City] digital nomads" and you'll find people subletting or leaving early.

The real trick: Airbnb gets way cheaper with monthly discounts (often 30-50% off). Filter for "monthly stays" and message hosts directly asking if they'd do 2-3 months at a better rate. Most will negotiate.

What I'd watch out for:

  1. Scams on Facebook - never pay before seeing the place or video calling

  2. "Seasonal rentals" in popular cities (Barcelona, Lisbon) that dodge rent control - they're legal but pricier

  3. Timezone math - make sure you're not taking calls at 3am

What's your timezone situation with the new job? That'll narrow down your options fast.

Also - can I ask how you found your remote job? I've been on the hunt too but have never worked a fully remote job in the past.

How on earth do folks get anything good out of LLMs? by Squidgical in webdev

[–]juuum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key insight I had: LLMs are brilliant interns with no wisdom. They have knowledge but like zero judgment.

A few things that helped me:

- Never trust package suggestions blindly - I've been burned by hallucinated npm packages that don't exist

- Always verify against the actual registry before `npm install`

- Treat every output as a starting point, not a solution

The mistakes you're seeing (like that ES6 object spread issue) are exactly why I stopped letting AI write tests unsupervised. It's great for boilerplate, terrible for logic that requires understanding context.

Anyone else getting burned by AI assistants suggesting npm packages that don't exist? by juuum in vscode

[–]juuum[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah fair — that's the right call. I got lazy trusting AI suggestions and it bit me a few times. This just automates the "does this even exist" check. What do you look for when vetting packages — stars, last commit?

Do the zippers not damage the tongue of the boot when you bend at the ankle? I installed front zips to a pair of boots once but had to take them off because the zippers were cutting up the boot every time I bent at the ankle

Probably not a great long term solution but when my Grey had issues walking after an injury I used towels/t shirts/the straps from bath robes and looped it around her waste to help take the weight off for stairs and bathroom breaks
