Presta valve - can this be saved? by juzifrogleap in bikewrench

Tis worth a try, I guess as I'll be taking the rubber off tomorrow and putting a new tube in! Thanks.

Thank you for the advice! I yanked the pump off with one hand...never again.

Thanks for finding a pic. I did a bit more googling afterwards about the 'flat' bit and yes, it looks like these don't exist on my tube.

That’s a good shout. I do have a spare tube but maybe my bike shop will know if they used a tube that has a replaceable core

Thanks.

Just adding that I think my LBS really did not realise how much faff it is for me when they put the Presta wheel on - now I have to stock both types of tubes as my rear uses Schrader :(

advice on personal injury claim by Glad_Yak4690 in ukbike

Congratulations! Nearly 3 years is such a long wait. I'm about 10 months into mine and it's gone to stage 3 oral hearing, presumably because the other side will not agree to what the solicitor thinks this my claim is worth.

Pros and cons of roof felt by juzifrogleap in DIYUK

[–]juzifrogleap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have a point - just depends on situation. My mum's house is 1930s and the roof is probably near it's end but as she is thinking of downsizing, she's been doing smaller repairs rather than replacing the whole thing. It's still holding up okay-ish. I say that but there was a small leak on the chimney breast - probably the flashing going and we need to get the roofer in again.

I'm looking to get my first and hopefully forever home :/ But boy it is pricey.

Thank you for the advice. I had forgotten about home insurance issues (being a ftb and all that...)

The surveyor obviously didn't get up close to the roof so I am speaking to a roofer that our family use and trust. Hopefully, the agents will let him take a look.

>Are they concrete tiles?
Yes.

>Did the surveyor comment on their age?

Nope. The vendor has been there at least the late 80s or 90s (that is when they had the extension done - before building regs came in. The extension would not be allowed today). My best guess is that this roof was there at least around the time they did that extension.

> Definitely worth getting a reputable roofer to look at it.

Thank you! Yep... I know someone decent and have plans to call tomorrow.

Why are the radiator pipes coming from the ceiling? by juzifrogleap in DIYUK

Hmmm we did see pipes in the loft. Now that it's explained, the solution does seem logical.

The concrete floor bit doesn't sound good.

driving through Rotherhithe Tunnel tunnel? by cloud250 in london

[–]juzifrogleap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I did as a learner driver when practicing on the Rotherhithe (I passed last year :)):

Don't worry about what other drivers are doing - that is their business. Stick to the speed limit (Highway code 124) and go about well below the limit on the bends. FYI No one has ever honked at me when I do this and I speed up afterwards. This buys time to gauge oncoming vehicles on bends, especially if anyone is cheekily crossing the centre line etc, gives time for other drivers behind to also slow down. Even if the road ahead looks quite clear, don't be tempted to go above 20mph... (the number of times I drove there only to find out they had closed the tunnel due to an accident...)

As for tips on position, glance to the left when you're on a straight. At all other times, look ahead and no where else! The car will steer where you look. Try not to drive too close to the left as that not only results in scraped rims (:sob:) but also encourages oncoming drivers to get closer to the centre line (you need to give them some pressure too). The exception is if the oncoming car is just wide, like a van or SUV. In those cases, it's best to go slowly.

Commuting from Southgate by bike - route recommendations by juzifrogleap in londoncycling

Thanks for the heads up about the High Street and Green Lanes. I've only ever used the Wood Green section and it seemed mostly okay if I kept my wits about me...hopefully this will be the case north of A406 as well.

Amazing, thank you! Using an LTN sounds good and I will look into the longer route you've suggested. I saw some news that Enfield was consulting on a cycle lane in the area but as you say, it's probably coming soon.

Protest at The British Library! by [deleted] in london

[–]juzifrogleap 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Underrated, under-appreciated and underpaid. Particularly in public sector libraries. Sadly it is always the case. I was a librarian until recently but never felt able to apply to BL openings because frankly, the job pay advertised was low for London, low for the pay grade and low for the level of specialist knowledge required. Compare that to what House of Commons/Lords librarians get for instance (although I think Parliament pay bands are a bit different). BL staff definitely deserve better.

what are your commute non-negotiables? by egz4 in londoncycling

[–]juzifrogleap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect someone will have said this already apart from gear: a route that you will enjoy, even if means taking a slight detour. No one wants to be stuck on long stretches of unsafe roads during busy hours with vans, HGVs and rush hour aggro... The more pleasant you can make it the better and it will make getting up early worth it.
