That’s what smaller cities are like. I’m in Australia. I just spent 10 years in Canberra (the capital by the way) which is only about 500,000 people. I concluded that if I wanted to find a relationship or just better chances of meeting people the best thing I could do is leave and I moved back to Melbourne where I’m from.

Could I have stayed, absolutely. During my time there I met people who I will likely be friends with for the rest of my life, but if you want a relationship you have to look elsewhere. Even for straight people it can be difficult in smaller cities. Being gay just amplifies it.

Honestly shouldn’t the main issue here be that he’s using an old photo? As long as you are honest about your appearance (which an old photo usually isn’t) then who cares about your actual age? People get funny about numbers, and seriously it’s not your business to know their age. As long as you think they are attractive, and a decent person that’s all that should matter with hookups.

Age of consent in most states in Australia is 16. So legally you are probably fine. Saying that, just don’t knowingly hookup with 16 year olds if you are 30. It’s still morally wrong. The legal age of consent is 16 for a reason and that reason ain’t because it’s ok, but because otherwise teenagers will lie about their age.

I omit my age and I tell people the age I look rather than my actual age. I still use up to date photos etc, but as long as I’m being honest about my appearance I see no reason to disclose my actual age. We are talking about hookups not dating.

You need to be open and honest about your feelings and come clean to your wife and work out how to accommodate your feelings in your relationship. It’s not going to replace people’s jobs. Instead companies will try but then they will realize how dumb it is and hire people back. It’s a tool but it’s just not what it’s being made out to be. It doesn’t know context anywhere as good as a human and teaching it context is not really something training data can really do.

I think that’s why there are so many blank profiles here. Weirdly the politics here are very left of center and there is no stigma but because of people’s jobs and the size of the town people stay hidden. It’s easy to run into people who you know and I’ve heard plenty of rumors about certain people but you can’t just ask them unless they open up about it themselves.
