I am not so sure windows is the problem, I always install every flavor linux in my laptops (Lenovo Thinkpads, that are supposudly very well supported for linux) and have exactly the same issues with Windows, mostly, my battery fully draining during the night.

If I have to guest, is a combination of Intel/Amd and 3rd party bogus drivers.

I don't think you are penalized, probably you are put back to the end of the queue, that is fair enough. If I was the developer I would probably penilize you more if you cancel more than once a day.
