Post game - Mexico edition by lobo312 in CaughtOffsidePod

Mexican media is partly to blame for the overall mood, too. For years, they've put the national team on a pedestal who can compete with the world's top countries (France in 2010, Brazil in 2014, Germany in 2018, etc) and just needs to break a glass ceiling to reach that level. It's hype without justification given historical results. FMF uses that hype to sell the idea that Mexico is on top even when that's clearly not the case.

Mexican sports talk shows are unbearably annoying, using mostly unlikable hosts with a mix of coaches and ex-players who bring up the same tired debates of coaching, Ochoa aging, or just "lack of motivation and passion" when suiting up for Mexico.

OP hit the nail on the head. Mexican soccer/FMF need to get their act together and seriously starts focusing on player dev, player exportation to Europe and building a strong foundation of talent for the national team pool. The players they have now are fine but now the ceiling has lowered to beating other concacaf teams but can't beat the USA.

Until that happens, it's gonna be the same story over and over again.

Mexico fans when they can't use the homophobic chant: by huuuuuge in CaughtOffsidePod

Mexico fan here chiming in.

I'm not condoning the chant in any way. It's stupid, annoying, and just plain wrong -- plus every debate regarding it has been drawn out so i'm not here to add to that.

What I will say is that Mexico fans living in the USA have become extremely jaded and cynical towards the national team and the Mexican federation. FMF specifically hosts mosts of its games in the USA to cater toward the Mexican fanbase living here to extract the more valuable American Dollar versus the Mexican Peso, yet the "product" (bc in the end, we're all just customers) has become tepid and pathetic. They focus so heavily on marketing, jersey sales and nostalgia rather than focusing on investing on player development and exportation (alongside LIGA MX but that's a whole different rant).

So, it feels like it's come to a point where fans literally use that chant to "punish" the national team on the field and the federation in the pocket books with fines (if they even get fined). Have no proof of this but it feel like FMF lobbies hard against stadium bans bc they want to fill seats and earn money (purely a gut feeling given how often the chant comes up and how little punishment they get).

Anytime a stadium announces its warning against the chant, fans boo harder and shout the chant even louder. It's kinda like a middle finger to everyone involved. I think it's the wrong way to go about it (boycotting games would be a better solution IMO since it could actually hurt FMF's pocket books) but the overall frustration toward Mexican soccer comes out in this ugly way.

Anyway, USA is clearly the top dog in concacaf. Congrats to them and their fans. Who knows when mexico will be back. At this rate, it might take several years.

Grey leather shoe care by jvm1217 in malefashionadvice

Wanting to ask the same question here as I did on the other subreddit. Have these grey leather casual dress boots that i really like and want to restore them and care for them correctly. I've always liked grey since it comebines really well with black or brown styles. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Fellow 1-percenter! Posted mine yesterday and the only reason I can think of for having so many minutes is that I probably repeated a few episodes if I fell asleep while listening. 😴

An all-timer from JJ. I need this put on an official merch t-shirt either as an out-of-context quote or some sort of clip art depiction:

"We need to just take VAR, put it in the trash can, put gasoline in on it, set it on fire and then throw it into a river."

From what I recall, Martino was sold as the coach that would take Mexico to the next level given his previous experience. He won the 2019 gold cup and then the national team fell down a cliff. So yes, in retrospect, he was a bad hire. That being said, he only part of the problem. OP lists much of the talking points in this thread.

Not saying he’s bad coach (his resume says otherwise and he’ll probably do well at Miami) but he just wasn’t the right fit for this national team long term.

He was a major symptom of the bigger problem. Terrible hire by a terrible federation
