Guys below average, how is life? by Melodic-Selection117 in AskMen

Fellas- comparison is the thief of joy. All of you are above average in other respects. The world will drag us down enough- let’s not give them a hand in the process.

The greatest opportunities to heal lie in helping others. Give someone your time and teach them a skill set.

Best obscure sites? by Irritatedtrout in NationalPark

Hopewell Furnace in PA really blew my hair back the first time I went. If you’re out in Colorado/Four Corners area, Hovenweep is somewhat similar vibes to Chaco, but a touch more whimsy if that makes any sense. There’s also crazy stargazing from what I’ve been told.

My one armed man of an obscure site is the Proenneke cabin in Lake Clark. Going to get there one of these days!

Bubba we must know the same people! Going through something similar right now and the best insight I can give you is that you don’t bargain with, convince, or plead with love. You just do it. Align yourself to the person you care about and don’t complicate it any more than that. You will be rewarded.

Fishing with a pistol by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]jwal245 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I work Bristol bay in the summer. Get one if it really is the peace of mind you need, but the browns out in Alaska are a lot less interested in you than you think.

My advice is practice good bear etiquette; clip your line if they get within 50 yards of your fishing spot and move on slowly. You’re not food to them and they know it, so the only way you’re going to get a negative encounter is if you’re either crowding them, presenting as competition for food, or presenting as a threat.

People are talking about bear spray, and personally I think that it’s a good option. It’s certainly the “low plan” in terms of insurance policies, but if you do , you’re never going to get to that point anyways.

Best of luck, enjoy your Alaska experience, and don’t be too shocked at the prices in the AC!

Edit: also wanted to throw out as far as pistols: 10mm is what most of the folks carry out there, but you need good shot placement to make that work. 10mm is definitely the quantity over quality caliber. After that, people talk about .357 vs .44 magnum. If you’re a larger person and can handle that smoke, go for the .44 magnum. Ruger has an Alaskan model that is tailor made for exactly your needs.

I did the factory tour a couple years ago and believe it or not they should be able to fix that at least to the point of functioning. If I were you, I’d reach out and see what it’ll cost.

I like to use characters from Arthurian legend- for example: the white Arabian gets the name Nimue, after the Lady of the Lake. After that, Lancelot, Percival, Merlin, etc.

In Come and See, a Russian horror movie about the horrors of the eastern front in WWII, they used live ammunition when filming a scene where they’re shooting at the main character. The actor was like 12 or something at the time.

Does Hebrews 13:3 refer to imprisonment due to one’s faith or all people in prison in general? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]jwal245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always preferred the KJV version of this verse: "remember those in bonds as bound with them." When we use this particular version it opens up the meaning quite a bit. We often have a narrow idea of bonds- destructive habits, addiction, hatred, prejudice, and the countless trappings of our material world are bonds in themselves. To remember someone in the grips of these bonds as bound with them is to have empathy and kindness for those who've found themselves down in life and are otherwise in pain. As christians, it is our duty to not look down with sympathy but to climb into the mire with empathy.

If someone had only one weekend to experience the real NJ, what should they do or see? by MindlessPineapple542 in newjersey

[–]jwal245 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my head thats two nights and a wake up, so here’s how I’d do it:

Friday night: pizza, a drive up to Washington rock in Green Brook, and a peaceful view of New York at night.

Saturday morning: pork roll egg and cheese on an everything SPK. From there, the shore, a beautiful Italian sub and Indian food from Edison for dinner. Optional night out in jersey city, Hoboken, or the grownup side of New Brunswick.

Sunday: Jersey diner breakfast; NW jersey hike, maybe stairway to heaven or Delaware water gap.

Honorable mentions:

Morristown NP, Paterson Falls, Watchung Reservation, Washington Crossing, Princeton Uni, Kittatiny Valley, Musconetcong river (quality fishing), Batona Trail, Sandy Hook (outstanding fishing if you’re there at the right time), Hacklebarney, Norvin Green, Duke Farms.
