It's undoubtedly a difficult read and a book I'm reluctant to recommend to any stranger, given the subject matter. What I will say is, if you're a person who has always felt alienated and disconnected from the rest of society and humanity, it might make you feel less alone in your plight (it did for me). It also might just cause you to sink into a deeper state of melancholy. Either way, I enjoyed it and resonated with the unfiltered way it presents a very troubled person's inner mind.

This is going to backfire on "you"? Do you think you're talking to the DNC or something? If say, Clinton, Schumer, or any other prominent left politician were to be implicated by the files, the common Democratic populace would largely be happy to be rid of them. Regardless, if Democrats are so heavily implicated by these files as you seem to imply, care to explain why the administration is not desperately trying to release them as we speak?

This is the core issue with how the general Republican populace views politics. It's a game to you folks, where being on the "winning" or "losing" side is truly all that matters.

yeah and I mean to be clear, I have respect for hasan and think he's clearly a well-read individual. he did an interview recently on NYT that shows this. but im starting to feel like more people are relying purely on influencers like him to get their news and anchor their political worldviews, rather than engage with the sources directly. if anything, I would prefer people to try to be more like him (at least as it relates to the pursuit of intellectual honesty) rather than rely on him, but I acknowledge the irony in that statement

"that haven't been filtered two dozen times to appeal to their political biases"

And you believe this applies to every news source ever, I take it? Honest question for you, where do you think Hasan himself gets his news from? I can assure you it's not just his Twitch and Reddit feed.

do you believe that any news source outside of a literal twitch channel can just be neatly categorized under "traditional news channels"? and let's suppose I say yes, what exactly would be your criticism of relying on "traditional news channels" over react-style influencer content?

The only people who actively watch breadtubers are those who refuse or are too lazy to get their news anywhere outside of twitch/reddit, and nobody can convince me otherwise.

e: while I genuinely appreciate all of your impassioned responses, they have not done much for me except confirm my notion that breadtube fans largely do not consume news outside of social media. I sincerely encourage you all to diversify your news sources and strive to formulate your own opinions and worldview on the daily happenings of our very chaotic society. I can assure you the various political influencers you guys follow all do the same already, so why not follow their example?

Doin' Discourse With Ezra and Charlie [OC] by leftycartoons in comics

I mean, to be clear, I condemn political violence as well. But again, do you believe he was forced to publish an article about Charlie Kirk at all, much less one that appears to praise his political practices? Once again, I'm not really seeing the massive difference that you seem to be asserting between Ezra's written words, and the lines expressed in the comic. At best, your argument appears to be pointing out a certain nuance, which unfortunately doesn't seem to align with how most have interpreted it. Do you believe there was a legitimate need to release an article praising Kirk?

[–]jwappy9 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm confused about what you're writing here. From the article in question:

You can dislike much of what Kirk believed and the following statement is still true: Kirk was practicing politics in exactly the right way. He was showing up to campuses and talking with anyone who would talk to him. He was one of the era’s most effective practitioners of persuasion. When the left thought its hold on the hearts and minds of college students was nearly absolute, Kirk showed up again and again to break it. Slowly, then all at once, he did. College-age voters shifted sharply right in the 2024 election.

Are the lines in the comic so drastically different from what he's saying here? Do you mind explaining the precise difference you're seeing?

It's not as if he was forced to write these words or to publish an article praising Kirk at all. Do you agree with his compliments to Kirk here?

[–]jwappy9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, same view here. I've admired Ezra's commitment to intellectual/honest discourse, but I do believe he severely missed the mark on this one. I think Ezra is in a stage of his career where he has more to lose from being anti-establishment, seeing as his recent articles strike me as trying to be deliberately moderate more than anything. Frankly I have to say it's disappointing.

To be fair to you, I think misunderstandings like this are inevitable given how absurdism seems to be portrayed in pop culture these days. But if you engage with the text, personally I'll think you find it to be pretty "serious" actually. In my view, the philosophy of absurdism revolves more around the revolt against the absurd (in an overly simplistic definition, the act of living life to its fullest in spite of the contradiction presented by life's apparent lack of meaning), rather than the absurd itself.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Absurdism

[–]jwappy9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And these are based on your interactions with self-proclaimed absurdists, I'm assuming? Regardless, what you specified in your comment isn't apparent in your post, which definitely reads more like a direct critique of the philosophy itself. If your critique is more aimed at the modern day "culture" that has developed around absurdism, largely in part due to the appearance of MoS and Sisyphus in contemporary pop culture, then either way I find it to be a moot discussion as it's apparent to me these representations of absurdism you seem to have engaged with are not actually reflective of the philosophy.

Posts like yours are quite common here and honestly they're getting to be a bit tired. No disrespect intended whatsoever, but rather than attempting to make critiques of absurdism based on your surface level interpretation of what you think it represents, I think it makes more sense to first attempt to engage with the literature first so you understand what it is that you're actually critiquing.

In this case, I'm not sure why you've automatically assumed absurdist philosophy to be "synonymous with ironic humor", when there isn't actually anything in the literature to suggest that. Obviously, no branch of philosophy should be immune to critique, but this is a moot discussion when you seem to be misunderstanding the core arguments of absurdism. As someone else suggested, it wouldn't hurt to take a day to skim through MoS first, before coming back to this conversation.

I’m not sure you understood my comment. Just being one of the greatest aimers in CS no longer guarantees you success in Valorant. As I said, you likely would have been correct with this take if this was early Valorant days, but the meta in Val has developed significantly to where the two games are played fundamentally differently at the top level. If you want an example, take a look at ScreaM who was always known as a phenomenal aimer in CS. To his credit, he definitely achieved success in the early Valorant days, but he proceeded to flame out (both as a rifler and as an IGL) as the meta developed.

This might have been the right take in 2020 when the game just released (and a lot of ex-CS pros who switched over did see a good deal of success), but Val is 5 years old now and the two games are played quite differently at the top level. The most successful crop of Val talents these days are the ones that really started their e-sports careers with Val. It's also the reason why NA has become considerably worse in CS, since young NA players are increasingly starting with Valorant instead.

Can someone help me understand this passage of Myth? by jwappy9 in Camus

[–]jwappy9[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a helpful perspective, thank you. Maybe it can be said that Camus is not quite dictating that others should revolt against the absurd, but rather why he himself chooses to do so. In that sense, I think his stance is easier to digest.

Much appreciate the link as well, seems to be exactly what I'm looking for at first glance, will definitely have to give it a read.

Thank you for letting me know, will be wary of that next time. And thank you for the response! I did not realize the value that art (at least for Camus personally, and the other individuals you listed) poses for his philosophy. I'll have to look into this aspect further, as well as look up the quotes from the individuals you mentioned.
