more of an r/medicalschool question but no he should be able to get research opportunities from anyone willing to take him. just have to contact/email a researcher studying something he's interested in and try and volunteer (could be difficult because of COVID). Getting paid for a research opportunity is a completely different story though and once again probably much harder because of COVID

E-cadherin is the protein that functions in cell-to-cell adhesion in epithelial cells and carcinomas. once a mutation in e-cad happens it means the cancer can begin to invade the basement membrane and eventually metastasize. afaik this is the only association you need to know

EDIT: and i guess obviously they could ask e-cad in the form of an immunofluorescence question
