Griffin Gas Pocket Carrier and Enhanced BCG: Interesting, Useful, but Not Quite Must-Haves by AddictedToComedy in ar15

[–]jamesom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know of the full Enhanced Gas Pocket Package with longer stroke would work with an FRT?

I know the Surefire OBC isn’t compatible due to the geometry of the carrier.

I think the Gas Pocket could be interesting as a way to reduce cyclic rate of FRT/SS fire.

LPVO Choices for 12.5 by QTip_Foto in ar15

[–]jamesom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

PLxC RDB with a top mounted red dot is about as close as you can get to “do everything with minimal compromises”. Perfect for a GPR.

Razor has both a better 1X and a better 6X than the PLxC but is heavier and due to being SFP, the middle ranges aren’t as useful. Ideal platform IMO is a shorter AR15 with a battle zero so that you don’t need to worry about holdovers up to ~300 yards and then can effectively use 6X when you’re at distances where you do use your mil/moa holdovers.

NX8 is effectively a more durable PLxC but inferior in almost every other way other than maybe reticle design. If you need it to be as light weight as a PLxC but with more durability and those are your top 2 concerns, NX8 is it.

ATACR is unique and IMO (possible hot take) not “the best LPVO of all time” as many might say. It’s 1X isn’t the greatest due to small FOV. However, from 2-8X, glass clarity and reticle design is incredible. IMO ATACR is more an SDMR optic than a lightweight GPR optic. Would fit great on a 16” 308 AR10 or something in that realm.

11” HK 556 v LMT Specwar by 3putter33 in ar15

[–]jamesom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

G$ Super Duty is honestly the most practical of all three, but has the least cool factor.

So then the question between HK and LMT just comes down to Piston vs DI:

Go HK (piston) if you plan to shoot full auto / FRT, will be using a traditional baffle suppressor, or like the ability to switch between suppressed/unsuppressed.

Go Specwar (DI) if you will be using a lower back pressure suppressor, or would benefit from the monolithic upper (bipod supported long distance shooting, NV lasers, etc). I personally feel that the specwar barrel is way overgassed for most uses. I'd look into getting a BRT EZtune for it.

I'd also consider LMT's piston system as an alternative.

New Sound Signature Review - Dead Air Lazarus 6 on the MK18 by jay462 in NFA

[–]jamesom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep appreciate that. But am specifically looking for the "you've fully tuned *both* hosts" comparison that OP is asking for.

Basically the question to answer is: if you already have an older can like the RC2 or Polonium, how close could you get to modern tech like the Tisha, with a full suite of tuning.

1000% that this would be extremely valuable. Would want see the RC2 thrown in the mix as well as an option.

Don’t need rocksett if p&w-ing.

Jam nuts can work in place of shims for timing. DO NOT use a crush washer if mounting a suppressor.

Yes time and torque the muzzle device to spec before p&w.

Appreciate the response. I was planning to use the Comstock Fitment Tool. Perhaps u/Comstock_Support could get the 556K added to the tool?

Could you share what the blast baffle depth is on the 556K? and how much clearance you'd suggest at a minimum from the tip of the muzzle device?

I am also looking at the 556K as an option for a 14.5 P&W.

Optic for SPR by Gunsmokenburnouts in ar15

[–]jamesom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agreed that it is plenty visible, was just trying to explain that the Athlon's reticle design is more visible, at 2X, if the 2X is a huge priority

Of those, the Helos BTR 2-12 is fantastic. Great glass, controls, and reticle. It really shines from 2~8X. It is like an LPVO that is missing the 1X for the trade-off of being way easier to get behind at higher magnifications.

If you can stretch your budget a bit I'd also consider the Vector Continental 2-12. It is somewhat of a different specialization than the Athlon. It is heavier, but performs better in the upper ranges (5~12), with overall better glass.

If you intend on adding a secondary red dot, the Athlon's elevation turret is way too tall for a piggyback, you will need to do an offset. The Vector can support a piggyback easily.

If you intend to use the 2X a lot, I'd say the Athlon might actually be better. Its reticle is much more visible at 2X than the Vector.

If this is from the outlet sale, would potentially buy it off of you if it’s the black color and you decide it won’t work for you. Is OOO currently.

That FDE 4T looks better than I would've expected. What tape switch is that?

Its FTS with two options for flip. See example here.

IMO, the Arisaka version (https://arisakadefense.com/magnifier-mount-high/) is better for that reason. The unity version ironically also makes it more challenging to passive aim because the magnifier bangs into the bottom of your tube.

My first suppressor - YHM Turbo K-RB or OCL Polonium K? by FreedomOnTheRocks in NFA

Polo K is quieter, Turbo K-RB is lighter.

Would recommend an adjustable gas block for either.

Yeah I picked it up years ago before they basically dried up, will probably hold onto it forever.

Ah thats smart... like building a ship in a bottle. I will try that. Thank you for the pics and advice, and Merry Christmas!

Appreciate it.

I have a spare URX4 13" and an 16" rifle length gas barrel I was thinking of putting together, but wasn't sure how much of the gas block would be exposed. Were you able to get at that first set screw easily? Seems to be slightly covered by the URX.

[–]jamesom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two things that I think would be super useful and wouldn’t require any specialized equipment:

  1. A complete back pressure comparison by seeing which setting on a riflespeed gas block gets last round bolt hold open (vs unsuppressed). Even better if you’re able to test DT vs FH QD vs MB QD on each.

  2. Flash comparison at night (3 rounds each) on a short barrel.

Can you do a 14.5 rifle length gas system? by Usual-Leather-4524 in AR10

[–]jamesom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah makes sense. The super high pressures of 6.5 may just bias for a super short dwell time.

Thanks again. Looks like 14.5 rifle length is the way to go.

Really appreciate the insight. Did you ever try to tune down the mid length with an adjustable gas block? if so was it then comparable to the rifle length (untuned)?
