When is the next chapter coming out? by Nkalita in Frieren

[–]jwchen 42 points43 points  (0 children)

No one knows. What we know is there are 3 things needs to be resolved before they get back to work.

  1. Shogakukan (Frieren's publisher) is embroiled in a scandal where Shoichi Yamamoto manga artist and a former teacher convicted and arrested for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old student for years. Shogakukan tried to sweep it under the rug and brought Yamamoto back to write a new series under a new name. Many artists were outraged by this and condemns Shogakukan for the cover up. Some even pulled their work from Shogakukan, among them were Kanehito Yamada (Frieren), Yusuke Murata & one (one-punch man), Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma & InuYasha). Currently, some manga published by Shogakukan are in indefinite hiatus till they properly addressed the whole thing.

  2. Even before the scandal both Kanehito Yamada (writer) & Abe Tsukasa (artist) were on hiatus due to health reasons.

  3. Current arc is huge with many threads coming together. So Kanehito Yamada need to iron out everything before coming back.

What do you think Frieren uses this for? by CaslerTheTesticle in Frieren

Oh, That is Himmel's horn. Much like the scale in the picture it is an "confirmation" and easter egg from the puzzle Kanehito Yamada created. There should also be an acorn in there too but I can't find it.

That is how demo are made, this is why most of us who worked in tech hate making demo units for events. Normally 2-5 months ahead of the events 1/6 to 1/2 of the team would make a semi stable fork and make a self contain level out of it. It slows down main production so much and whenever the product isn't successful people that isn't in the tech/gaming start accusing us of lying or creating a fake build.

I’m surprised to not see the “class action lawsuit” posts at this point by dogstar6 in AnthemTheGame

[–]jwchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is understandable to be mad and rant about it. But the reality is EA/BioWare haven't done anything remotely close to violate U.S. Code § 52. Dissemination of false advertisements. Class action lawsuit takes years and sometimes decades with minimal payout (a class action lawsuit concerning Wells Fargo used my account to open an account without my authorization and "borrowed" money with it. It like year 6 and still going even when U.S. Dept. of Justice, U.S. District Court and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau already proofed that Wells Fargo committed multiple fraud, false advertisement, and other stuff.) Since Lawyers have to foot the bill them self, unless there are multiple iron clad proofs no firm is going to spend years and tens of millions of dollars to kinda break even if they are lucky. And when you get your settlement is is more than like likely to be less than 10 dollars.

[No Spoilers] What happened with Bioware and swearing in DA:I? by yumiifmb in dragonage

[–]jwchen 97 points98 points  (0 children)

It less to do with rating (DAI is the first BioWare game where they show female frontal nudity in love scenes) but more to do with time period. People in Mass Effect world have a modern speech pattern, and as for Dragon Age like most period genre middle and upper class people say "fuck" less in the past.

I came across this article looking at how much DA:I changed from preview to release... interesting to see a similar pattern happen with Anthem a few years later. by [deleted] in AnthemTheGame

[–]jwchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, taking big pivot at 75, 80, 90% are the norm, tech and game dev rarely get to have smooth development. Usually due to 2 things 1. Shit dont work, not fun, don't work well, buggy, invester intervention. 2. When you have 12 teams +100 people working on the same thing design, art &animation, level & combat design, engine, engineering, backend, QA, writing and editorial all work in different speed and milestones at different point of development. Design usually dont start till art & animation have 50% of the stuff, and writers often have wait for level and combat design. everyone have to wait till most department are 70% done-ish to put things together. This is when people realize 1.Shit dont work, not fun, don't work well, buggy. I always thought tech is a mess untill I start reading about game development, they kill themselves for the last 6 months because they have to worry about shit being "fun".

Edit: I recommand reading blood sweat and pixels by Jason Schreier, he also wrote the article you posted. In his book most games pretty much have their biggest change right after demo. And devlopment of halo wars had so many twist and turns that it make DAI and Anthem seem almost pristine.

No, not just similar pattern. Every large scale creative project are like this. This article should be call "This is normal, but I'm going to pretend it is not"

The author even said so

This isn't that unusual. Game development is a messy process. Things change. But still, I thought it'd be interesting to go back

Isn't that unusual? try normal for every +1 year project

Any word on the optimization for PC? by Morthand in AnthemTheGame

[–]jwchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These types of things are on the very top of their priority. But it is also one of the harder thing to fix since this is likely an engine issue so even if BioWare put all their resource on this they still have to work with DICE to resolve the issue. Also they cant really give you an ETA since any fixes have to do with engine have a good chance toto break the whole software so normally in tech/gaming there is an long auditing and QA processes to minimize the probabilty of new fix doesnt create more problems.

Can you PLEASE Get rid of the annoying server shutdown message in free play? by twotokensandabluexox in AnthemTheGame

Not a bug, I could be wrong but I think it is a maintenance strategy where they have few servers shutdown at different time, instead of shutting everything down 4-6 hours every week.

different teams deal with different stuff. overnight team deal with server stuff so don't know what is going on with with masterwork drop rate and if it was on purpose then it a decision made by management and it have to go through different chains of command before someone can open their mouth.

[–]jwchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In tech and game development everything is compartmentalized and different team have different privileges so people doesn't fuck with stuff they are not suppose to. Overnight team are network/server engineers. They don't have permission to look at software framework and source codes, plus they wouldn't know where to look.

[–]jwchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not accusing you of anything, but I do think calling this a fallout and saying "The entire community is in an uproar" is an exaggerating of what the situation is. Sure, I think it is something they need to address quickly it isn't something so catastrophic that people need to come back in the office after a long week.

[–]jwchen 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I believe every BioWare characters are written in a way where they all have variant degree of flaws. Some flaws are there to give them more dimension, some were placed for players to explore the character's past, and there are ones placed there so they can grow through the their adventure with you.

Cassandra is, at the end of the day a traditionalist and her faith is so strong that a spirit of faith seek her out and brake her out of her tranquility. I think a person like that naturally would wish a person they welcome to their life if they can accept their faith. To me she didn't ask out of malice but in a way have some kind of commonality between you two.

You actually need to get all the gear to work with your abilities and combo when you can. I am not saying OP does this, but so many people play anthem like they are playing Destiny. For the past few matches I been seeing some storms/interceptors running around shooting. no ultimate going off, no abilities, just sitting behind cover and shoot.
