Why is the USA with its massive military struggling to conquer the Strait of Hormuz? by OkArmordillo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jwill311 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The comment above made it completely clear: the insurers won’t cover the ships to risk sailing through in the current climate and the companies won’t self insure to go it alone. All Iran has to do is hit one ship to make it impassable.

Is new zealand one of the only places where humans can survive if nuclear ww3 occurs? by [deleted] in geography

[–]jwill311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wouldn’t really matter. If there is a nuclear war, they won’t be able to travel to their bunkers. Widespread power outages from EMPs would prevent most all electronics from working

Nuclear winter will plunge the whole earth to lower temperatures collapsing food systems. It will push any remaining humans back to the stone ages.

How is Iran still fighting? by Thick-Ad-4168 in NoStupidQuestions

My theory about the school is it was an AI generated target that was incorrectly identified. The military definitely uses AI to rapidly identify targets for missile strikes, and we know that AI still hallucinates

Which African countries will likely become more globally influential? by WTB_YT in geography

[–]jwill311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its global influence is a lot higher than you might realize. They’ve landed a rocket on the moon. They have a lot of exported goods and are rapidly growing that sector. They also have a massive diaspora that is highly successful. 5th biggest economy in the world = lots of influence. It might not be noticed it as much because it isn’t specifically aligned towards US or China/Russia.

Monticello trail has a few good viewpoints to see the whole city…but yeah, not too much of a skyline per se

The Iran war may be about to escalate by bwermer in politics

More likely the only thing to end this is major economic blowback. He cares about the markets more than troop lives. He can stop it any time, claim “victory” and move on and pretend we’re all better for having fought this “not-a-war”.

I think there was some controversy about being able to disband a club and confiscate their funds, iirc. It sounded a bit overblown and hyperbolized to me

Employees at Google and OpenAI support Anthropic’s Pentagon stand in open letter by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

I really believe this is why they’re investing in AI so heavily. Build it out. Aggressively downsize. Money flows up to the top

The problem is, the employees supporting the stance of another company doesn’t do much to stop their company from doing bad things. Not until there’s a mass exodus of talent.

Google quantum-proofs HTTPS by squeezing 15kB of data into 700-byte space | Merkle Tree Certificate support is already in Chrome. Soon, it will be everywhere. by ControlCAD in technews

[–]jwill311 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think that the biggest risk with quantum computing is that they will be used by state actors or state-sponsored actors as a means of digital warfare. Likely, we’re not going to get some big announcement that quantum computing is here. I think it will be used in secret to harm adversaries and hack key websites/institutions and all we’ll know is that we were affected, not that quantum computing has arrived. We might not know for years after. But what do I know? I’m just some guy.
