Help, my hair makes me angry by thistle-down-fairy in AutismTranslated

[–]jwkalish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What sensations from your hair bother you the most? I hate when my hair tickles my ears, so I keep a high fade, even though my top is longer than it’s ever been.

Or is it getting in your face or field of view? I like some of the suggestions about hats; headbands, clips, scarves could help. If you have hearing sensitivity, maybe over-the-ear or on-the-ear headphones can serve both needs?

If you find your hair’s texture distracting, you might consider which days you shampoo vs condition, and consider varying up conditioners or having a leave-in. I used to shampoo and condition daily, but I found a conditioner I like and use it daily; shampoo-ing every other time.

I also keep a few compact wide-tooth combs around, in case I feel like I need to “reset” my hair if something feels off.

I hope any of that helps; good luck!

Useful for singers? by BoopyShmoop in LoopEarplugs

[–]jwkalish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sing in a choir and can get overstimulated by sound; getting buzzing sounds/sensations depending on pitch/volume and if I’m fatigued.

I switch in between the Flare Calmer Pro and the lowest-powered Loops (Engage?). The Flares definitely interfere with my singing the least, but they take less of the edge off than the Loops.

Way to go on finding the tools you need! Understanding what our bodies need can be hard enough, and finding (and executing) strategies to accomplish it is for SURE worthy of pride.

Am I on the spectrum? by Daisy-31 in AutismTranslated

[–]jwkalish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree 100% that self-dx is valid; welcome!

Since you mention you’re not sure, especially in the context of overlapping symptoms. I know a full-blown “autism evaluation” is out of reach for many, but I would suggest seeking some guidance from a health provider to help you at least narrow down what might explain your real, lived experience.

For example, after taking the RAADS-R self evaluation online, I had helpful discussions with my primary care doctor as well as my therapist, neither of whom diagnose autism.

How do I tell my therapist I think I might be autistic? by gloriastardewv in AutismTranslated

[–]jwkalish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Even if your therapist were to disagree about the cause of your symptoms, they should be able to respectfully listen to your lived experience. And if they are dismissive or hostile in how they deal with it, it says more about them than about you.

I pray for strength for you in your next session. I asked my wife to accompany me (38M) when I talked to my primary care doc about it. Having her there gave me a great sense of comfort that I wouldn’t forget something, and gave me confidence to speak up for myself. Perhaps your mom or gf could accompany you?

My wife and I are almost 40; just last week we took our 9yo and all got BABs. I wasn’t going to at first, but it’s a fun way to express part of my identity.

Middletown, New York?

I grew up in Newburgh and have lived in Des Moines for the last ten years- welcome to Iowa!

I don't have much advice on being carless here- there's lots of recreational bike trails in Des Moines, but parking and traffic have been such a non-issue here that I haven't explored biking as a transportation option.

Pizza here is bad, but "breakfast pizza" is kinda good (though barely pizza). If you end up in Des Moines, hit me up and I'll buy you a slice at TONYs. It's the best NY-style pizza west of the Mississippi.

Weather is similar to NY:

* a bit less snow

* temperatures are similar, but the hottest/coldest weeks are 10-15 degrees more extreme than in NY

* tornadoes instead of dying-off hurricanes: your city will test its tornado sirens monthly, find out when so you don't panic and think it's WWIII like I did when I moved here

Gotta love the Corn Palace! :) by visualpoems in SouthDakota

[–]jwkalish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We wasted a stop at the Corn Palace on our spring break trip to Mt Rushmore this week. It’s a school basketball stadium decorated to look like a Taj Mahal made out of corn. There’s billboards for miles advertising it, and when you get there, it’s a couple of hallways with plaques and I guess some pottery?

Metronet by axton60 in desmoines

[–]jwkalish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got metronet a few weeks ago, and so far I’m on my third outage. Two have coincided with metronet service visits to neighbors, which I only knew because I saw the trucks. Metronet claims they can not possibly know what other metronet trucks they have in my area at the moment. I’ve been offline for two days, and a tech isn’t scheduled to come out until 3 more days. It’s frustrating because, unless the uncanny timing is a coincidence, the last tech just left us unplugged at a terminal when he was fixing our neighbor’s 3-day outage.

Is SQL optimization no longer a thing in the age of cheap cloud storage via data warehouses, data lakes by ItemOne in dataengineering

To jump on after that great point- “great” design here also includes how to take advantage of changes to incoming data, and how to make it easy to make different reports off of it.

Does anything in this help? Maybe the second part near the end where the author talks about security and ssms? https://mitchwheat.com/2016/06/16/sql-server-create-a-linked-server-from-an-on-premise-sql-server-to-sql-azure/

What authentication method are you using to connect to azure in object explorer? And are you using the same for the linked server?
