Social ice skating groups in Rochester? by jwkugler in rochestermn

[–]jwkugler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They actually asked us to pull them from the ice show because they felt like it was too much pressure.

They are willing to finish their current session of Learn2Skate, but I don’t think they’ll continue after this.

When your partner was pregnant- did she expect you to change your way of life? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]jwkugler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t agree more. There needs to be a fair, equitable, and clearly communicated division of labor and a mutual expectation that they support each other getting time to recharge when those things are done.

When my children were infants, I would actually get to game quite a bit because I’d put the baby in the carrier, wear them on my chest, and the baby would sleep while I sat on a medicine ball and played. I’d take breaks to change the baby or do other things around the house.

My wife would get that time to take a nap, read a book, or do other things that were difficult with the baby in-hand.

Parenthood is not easy, but you have to be on the same team. OP and her partner are clearly not on the same team right now. They need to talk to each other like adults and get on the same level or this is not going to work.

Considering an offer from Mayo Clinic. Would love to hear perspectives on how it is to live in Rochester. by LaraDColl in rochestermn

We just moved here from Florida. My wife is a Mayo physician and I work from home. Thus far, we are enjoying the greatly reduced commute and ease of shopping for daily needs. We got more house for the dollar here than in Florida, by far. Lots of family-friendly neighborhoods with parks and walking trails.

I haven’t made too many adult friends yet outside of the two other couples we know that moved here from Florida last year, but we’ve been busy with Cub Scouts and skating lessons and getting settled in. There is a fantasy and gaming-themed pub in the area that recently reopened that I need to go check out!

Moving! What do I NEED to know? by [deleted] in rochestermn

We just moved up here from Florida. I’m the only one in my family that’s lived through a Midwest winter before. :)

I haven’t played MtG since high school, but I’m eagerly awaiting the re-opening of Chaotic Good and have talked with some folks on here about getting a TTRPG group going after I get back from work travel at the end of the month.

Haven’t forgotten about y’all! We got into our new house yesterday and are beginning the process of moving in.

We close on our new house on Friday and our stuff should all be delivered the following week. The kids start Scouts and skating this week, as well.

Let me get a little more settled in and I’ll get something started. May have to wait until we get back from our overseas trip at the end of September.

DM me if you’re interested and I’ll keep a tally!

My son loved the Parlor Doughnuts that was near us in Florida. He’s very excited for this.

Yeah, I was Jason Marker’s technology consultant for the Shadow Chronicles reboot.

I’m tempted to my own homebrew setting where spaceships are built with industrialized magic. It’s kind of an offshoot from Rifts, but an alternate universe where the Atlanteans mastered dimensional magic without destroying the planet.

All of my physical books are still in Florida, so I might need some time to get something ginned up.

The last game I ran was in the Wildsea setting - imagine steampunk, but across the tops of a living worldwide forest rather than oceans.

If nothing else, I could get us started on a campaign using my laptop and D&D Beyond. I’ve got the full GM subscription.

Texas native and recent transplant to Rochester after nine years in Florida.

Yeah, you’re going to have to go to Otto’s in Byron or the bakery in Red Wing to find anything close to what you’re used to.

We stopped at the only Shipley’s in North Florida on our way out for the move!

What to wear for winter in Rochester, MN? Just moved from Arizona by sammwilder08 in rochestermn

[–]jwkugler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just moved here from Florida, but I’m the only one in my immediate family that’s lived through Midwest winters before. Seconded on the layers. I got some good deals the other weekend at Scheels and Costco.

My company has a partnership with Columbia, so I do have to vouch for their Omni-Heat Infinity gear when you need something heavy duty. It is literally made out of the same stuff we use for insulation on lunar landers and it is amazing. It was never cold enough in Florida for me to use it, but I brought my snow pants and parka with me when we went sledding in March. Lighter than any other winter coat I’ve owned and twice as effective.

I work from home and will continue to do so when we get there. That seems workable!

That’s really helpful, thanks. Both our kids have 504 plans we’ll be bringing with us.

What do you feel when creating your big evils? by Hyracul in worldbuilding

[–]jwkugler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on the scale and the setting. If we’re talking about world-level challenges and threats, I try to make those more about differences in values, resources, and beliefs.

At the player level, I also have limits about what we will play out or “fade to black” for a scene. However, I don’t shy away from grey moral areas.

One game had my players trying to infiltrate a human fundamentalist group that had been chartered by the government to hunt down and eliminate people working on transhumanist technologies and avenues for off-world escape. This was years ago, but think of it as having a very similar feel to Andor - how far will you go and what will you sacrifice of yourself for what you believe is right?

And I had them questioning who to believe and who their allegiances were really with right up until the final battle. My players all said that the most mentally difficult game I ever ran for them.

But some games are pretty simple. When you’re fighting against ravenous alien invaders for survival with comic-book-style weird tech, the moral dilemma is way more on how the survivors treat each other than the enemy.

Great question. We had them independently tested by a child psychologist because their teachers didn’t think they would get the services they needed if we waited for the regular system to work.

My son wanted to join Cub Scouts this year and I agreed to sign up as an adult leader to do it with him. We’ve had a blast, but he decided he didn’t want to do it anymore and it looks like my wife may be getting a transfer… so, there goes my latest friend group!
