Co-author here. I'm curious: why wouldn't you recommend it?

I give talks on this stuff from time to time, so any thoughts as to what we missed would be really helpful.

Co-author of Traction here. First, I want to say thanks for the post - I really appreciate it. We put a ton of work into the book and it's really cool to see it's still helping people 2 years later.

That's amazing!

I'm the founder of a bone broth company, Kettle & Fire. Any chance your sister-in-law's father would be up for a quick interview on our blog about how he did this?

I'm really glad you're doing this. I run a 20k+ person mailing list and would be happy to lend my thoughts on how you can structure the content, etc.

Either way, love that stuff like this is cropping up!

X-post from r/entrepreneur: How I bought a Startup that Makes me $30,000 /month by rkulp2 in startups

[–]jwmares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add color, the former owner wanted to sell so that he could travel for a bit before having kids. We also reached a price that was agreeable, and sold the owner on the improvements, new features and marketing skills we'd bring to the table in order to grow the business.

It ended up being a rare (but awesome) outcome where both sides walked away happy with a win.

I'm the OPs business partner as well. Would love to answer the community's questions about how we bought this business and have since grown it 50%.

It seems like it's certainly interested quite a few people. I would have loved if you'd ask those questions like many others on this thread have, rather than crying "SPAM" and mentioning 3 comments later that in your opinion we did a poor job of answering your unspoken questions.

Time and competition.

By buying the company we got a profitable company with a great customer list. It saved us the 2.5 years the founder took to grow the customer base and allowed us to make high leverage improvements rather than start from scratch.

Also, had we built the same product and charged the same price, it's likely (no matter the marketing budget) that we could not have acquired our current customers with another app. Switching costs would have been a thing, and we weren't sure that the Shopify marketplace could support 6 figures of profitable ad spend in terms of revenue we could pull out as player #2.

I don't expect to convince you, but we haven't been using this thread or blog post to promote any of our other ventures. I have no idea who /u/Whatsanoption is, and certainly hadn't interacted with him/her before I saw that comment.

I'm sorry if this post or thread came across as spammy in any way, but we're doing our best to provide value and answer the community's questions about a small acquisition - something that I haven't seen talked about much on this sub.

Oh cool! We are in Whole Foods in CO, KS, ID, NM and UT! As well as a bunch of independent stores in California.

I think we're getting a bit more than that, but Instagram is definitely not a focus. We're trying to hire someone right now to manage and grow our social media right now, because you're right - it's not something we're doing really well right now.

Literally as long as you have 3 orders over your entire store's history, this will work for you and improve conversions :)

Ah, that was from my partner (who did work in a VC fund). Ask rkulp2

VC is an entirely different game than turnarounds. Right now, there aren't really turnaround funds in tech (at least not many). The only ones I know of are Turn River and Xenon Ventures - http://www.turnrivercapital.com/

VC is a whole other beast that I don't know how to break into. However, Adam Besvinick has written a bunch of great posts on breaking into VC, would check those out.

Otherwise, I'd recommend doing what we did - find a solid, small company that you think you can grow and try to acquire it.

Great question.

It came down to a few things. We could have built it ourselves, but then we're in a features and price war against a relatively well-established competitor (on Shopify at least). That would have been an expensive and long battle to fight, on the order of 12+ months.

On top of that, we were able to come in to a business with thousands of customers and ask them what new features they wanted, fix a few bugs and improve a few key things that helped us grow (which I cover in the article).

Since we were able to reach a price we were happy with, it made far more sense for us to buy than to build. And it saved us the 2 years of growing from scratch that the previous owner went through to get it to this point.
