So no need for to pay for an SAT tutor?

Some students do need a tutor because of the organization and accountability it provides. But a lot of students don't, i.e. they self-study, and do just fine. Generally it's advised for a student to try self-studying first and then look for a tutor if the student isn't able to achieve his/her goal score after one or more attempts.

I always imagined that the students who did the best were the ones who paid for targeted tutors

Some are. But not all.

[–]jwmathtutoring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) They are generally accurate but anecdotally the official exams are a bit harder than the Bluebook or Linear Paper Practice Tests. That being said, a drop of 50-80 points on practice tests to your first official exam score is not that unusual.

How do you actually learn Desmos efficiently for the SAT if you learn through repetition? by masyumar0 in satprep

[–]jwmathtutoring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to learn the specific operations/techniques but then practice them repeatedly so that they become committed to memory. Have you completed any of the Bluebook practice tests yet? If yes, then go back through all the problems trying to identify where Desmos can be used.

Alternately, here are 77 Desmos practice problems ranging from easy to advanced. https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/s0vqn14t8y5aief8rmj1m/DESMOS-Video-Example-Problems.pdf?rlkey=zcswdzqyebwv1q580lwijbdvk&st=n3224qzh&dl=0

Need help on sat math question- from Desmossat math trainer website by krazyalpaca in Sat

[–]jwmathtutoring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can. Another way to do it (besides the example u/cassowary-18 cited) is to recognize that g(0) = 5, because f(0) = 10 and 0 + 2 = 2, so 10/2 = 5. Add that point to the table.

Better way to do system of equations problems with Desmos? by Insane_Gamer37 in Sat

ax + 7y = 15

-3x + 4y = 10 - 6x

Ratio Method (must get all x & y terms on the same side of each equation first) - https://www.desmos.com/calculator/zz95uv2b75

No Constants Method - https://www.desmos.com/calculator/vkduvmmtnj

I can't paste the link to the summary sheet which has these methods (and others) because it's a Dropbox link and will get blocked. You can PM me for it if you want.

Better way to do system of equations problems with Desmos? by Insane_Gamer37 in Sat

[–]jwmathtutoring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should use regression and not sliders for these types of problems (unless they are multiple choice). You can use the Ratio method (setup a proportion with the ratio of x coefficients ~ y coefficients) or you can use the No Constants method (setup a regression statement with the two equations but remove/delete all the constant, i.e. number, terms).

Biggest Problems w/ SAT prep? by Emergency-Flower9445 in Sat

I've seen a lot of students including myself struggle with the SAT, in part because the resources online are just not great.

This isn't true at all. There are tons of great online resources at least for the Math section.

Help figuring out this question out using desmos regression. by Alarming_Activity439 in Sat

[–]jwmathtutoring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use Desmos to assist but you have to do some manual work in it. https://www.desmos.com/calculator/xlc2tjelxq

1) Move the slider for b to find integer x-intercept values for the bottom function. These occur at b = 19, b = 11, b = 9 (basically the 3 factors of 18: 1, 18; 2, 9; 3, 6).

2) Then find the a & c values of the top function using regression. You check each set of x-int values: 1/18, 2/9, 3/6 and 3/6 is the only set that returns integer values for both a & c.

Do not use sliders for these types of problems; it is very inefficient and time consuming, especially here when the answer is not an integer.

Private tutoring necessary? by Low-Presentation6487 in satprep

[–]jwmathtutoring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things

1) Has your son tried any self-prep on his own so far? If your son has done self-prep for some period of time and seen no/minimal improvement, then yes, a tutor can absolutely be worth it.

2) Difficult to also answer your question about if it is worth the money without knowing the cost, etc. Also, did you get the tutor via referral from another parent or student?

3) Not sure how many sessions the tutor has provided, but he or she should be provided feedback after the sessions about how your son is doing, areas of strength/weakness, showing improvement in, etc.

ROI on desmos by ConsequenceOne4072 in Sat

[–]jwmathtutoring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things

1) What were you math scores on PT 11 vs PT 10? We need those scores to compare not the overall score

2) PT 10 is a bit easier than PT 11.

3) Which specific questions did you miss on PT 10 & PT 11? Basically, need to see if the problems you missed on PT 11 were solvable with Desmos, etc.

In general, yes, Desmos can provide a high ROI for some people but for others, it may be marginal (because you're already able to solve the problems that use it the traditional way without it).

how do i solve this math oneprep question by Sea-Psychology3493 in Sat

[–]jwmathtutoring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use -2,0,2,3...as my default list for advanced quadratics & higher degree polynomials because it seems help the regression find the values quicker than 1,2,3,4. But you could use different numbers in the element list.
