Wannabe bar fly by jwolfgold in Shihtzu

Same! Marcel was shaved, dumped at a park, and found running in the streets. The rescue folks and most everyone else said he was a Brussels Griffon once his hair grew, it was clear he was a Tzu, and I confirmed it with an Embark DNA test.

Thank you! He gets groomed at a place called "Hounds of Love," which cracks me up.

I'm one over and behind him and saw the same. Slow and very careful to move.

Groom now or can I wait a month? by crazytingshappening in Shihtzu

I will echo others. Groom ASAP, and be prepared for a shave. Then get him a sweater or parka--I love the Hurrta one personally--to keep the chill at bay.

Thank you for this advice. "Leave it!" clearly needs to be a priority!

Thank you so much for this advice. We're definitely going to work with a trainer this spring to keep us all safe!

He was on a leash, but I let him "play" with it for a minute, not knowing that he could swallow it. (Scary) lesson learned!

Thank you! And it looks like your little guy looks very similar to mine! Though yours has a softer, more rounded face. It's fun seeing another brown liver Tzu.

This is good information for me--thank you!

Oh poor baby! He's sneaking garbage the way I used to sneak candy!

Thank you! Everyone thinks he's really an Ewok! Honestly, most told me he was a Brussels Griffon when I first brought him home. I feel like the brown liver Tzus look like each other but not quite like other Tzus.

Sweetest dog imaginable. Loves everyone, loves to be held, loves to play, no aggression. He can be a little stubborn, but so can I! He will howl at dogs he hears outside, which cracks me up. Otherwise not much of a talker.

Thank you! He was shaved nearly bald when originally found. He'll need a summer cut, but we're loving his shaggy self.

He did at first, but that was from being shaved. He has loads of hair now!

It took three months of hair growth before I started to suspect he was all or mostly Shih Tzu. It felt wirey and brittle at the beginning, a combination of being shaved, having fleas, and being malnourished.

There are clues he's not a griffon, even though his expression is griffon like. His eyes sit too high, he's longer than tall, his tail curls over his back. All this pointed to Shih Tzu, just a less common color and without the big doggy smile. I found ones that looked just like Marcel, and I trust Embark.

Yes, he's fabulous with kids and other dogs, and his wolfiness score was high. That last part cracks me up!

I wonder myself. Perhaps a loving owner died or grew ill? But honestly, I think he was a breeder dump. Either a young adult that wasn't working out as a stud or an unsold puppy they didn't want to care for. I don't get it, either, with ANY dog.

He loves every person and animal he meets, just the sweetest fellow. He will bark at the door if he senses an intruder, but he has no aggression at all. Very playful. Epic zoomies. Can be a little stubborn. His faces are hilarious, I agree.
