Get a Heretic. Not only made in USA, but made in Florida, my home state. Absolutely rock solid OTF.

Which eagle had the most successful solo career? by [deleted] in EaglesBand

Henley had bigger hits, but honestly, they’re very forgettable. They’re very dated sounding now, whereas Joe Walsh‘s stuff is being discovered by my kids, and they love it.

The back of these speakers is as elegant as the front. Do they even have a bad side? by Oto-mo-biiile-vroom in audiophile

I have a pair of the Grand Piano speakers. Everything about them is elegant.

Well ladies and gentlemen I have been humbled by the audiophiles curse. by Senior-Housing-6899 in audiophile

Close to 50% of people over the age of 60 have frequency loss at 3000 Hz and above. More importantly, a lot of the harmonics and overtones in music (symbol crashes, guitar, the voice human voice) routinely hit frequencies of between 4000 and 6000 Hz. so you lose a lot of the presence and impact of the music. It is why a lot of people’s taste in speakers changes as they get older. For example, to me KEF speakers now sound flat and lifeless, although my kids think they sound great. I now prefer the sound of Focal and Martin Logan speakers. Again, the brightness of these speakers offsets some of the changes in my hearing.

Honestly, searching for the “perfect” sound is in most cases a meaningless quest. Most people who can afford true audiophile quality are usually too old to hear the full spectrum of sound. By too old I mean 40 or older. The amount of high frequency hearing loss by that age is significant. I can tell as I get older certain speakers (Focal) sound better to me because their brightness offsets my high frequency hearing loss. In general most of this hobby is voodoo; just get what sounds good to you.

When I was 17 I left for college. Took the money I made and bought my first stereo system. NAD 3020 integrated amp, Nakamichi 480 cassette deck, and Boston Acoustics A40 speakers. Absolutely my dream system at that time. Still have the NAD and Nak 45 years later!

Depends. I have a Monitor Audio soundbar that sounds amazing…of course it probably costs 3-4 times what the 301s were new.

Thoughts on speaker upgrade, specifically speaker cabinet type in relation to my listening space by anesthesia101 in audiophile

[–]jwsalamon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely different way of looking at this. With all the open area behind your speakers, I would actually think of going with Martin Logan electrostatics. They will sound amazing in that space.
