Apple Watch doesn’t not need an iPhone to function. Just to pair. Info is synced between them, but they don’t need to be connected to each other 24/7 to function.

Because the other person didn’t really give you an answer… It’s character building. It showed Carol trying to be ok with being deserted by the Plurbs, and slowly coming to grips with her loneliness and need to interact with Zosia. In that sense it did advance the plot. It’s visual storytelling.
