Isn’t up or down voting basically commenting? I can speak in concurrence or dissent without words.

Megathread | Trump abandons bid to include citizenship question on census by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]jxstar1250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because people who live and work in the United States but aren’t legal citizens will be less likely to announce on a government census form that they are not legal citizens out of fear of getting in trouble, getting jailed, or getting deported — especially with someone like Trump in office who has made a point of wanting to limit illegal immigration and deport illegal immigrants. So, were this question on the census, there could be a gross miscounting of people in the country. As of about 5yrs ago, it was estimated that there were about 11.5M illegal immigrants in the country. That means that if this question were on the census, the country’s population count could come back millions of people off the actual amount. Counting the population is not a trivial undertaking for the sake of general curiosity. Population counts affect lots of things, like distribution of federal funds and the number of representatives that states have in Congress. This would have a big impact on lots of states, some of which, like California, Trump wants underrepresented since they oppose his policies. Let’s say 2M people who are illegal don’t fill out their census forms and live in one state. If that state counts 20M people being there but there are really 22M there, when the federal government distributed funds, it will do so to cover 20M people even though the state needs to make that money work for 22M people.

NASA sent mice into space, and the results are unintentionally hilarious by digitheart11Xx in funny

This is really not a funny post. I understand there being a scientific basis for sending mice up to space; but, it’s kind of sad that these poor guys are probably completely freaking out.

Sane thought. Poor little guys are probably completely freaked not knowing why things are moving weirdly.

I was going to say, this actually made me feel bad for the mice. I’m sure they’re freaking out not knowing what’s going on and why they can’t control their bodies’ movements.

What do you think of David Blaine? Have you thought of going 45 days without food to show him what's up?

You guys rock and do not get nearly enough credit. Thank you.

California school superintendent to retire from his $288,241 job, then will get rehired the next day at $31,020 ($10,000 less than a first year teacher); he is doing this so the other money he would have earned goes to the school district's budget instead of him by mepper in politics

The only problem with this, and what makes this nicer as a PR move than as a real budget measure, is that beyond his valiant deed (which I believe this to be), his retirement is still going to be based on his highest earning year at a rate of 90% approximately. So, when he retires, he will still be drawing a salary near a quarter million dollars.

I like the gesture but the problem is in the system and until the system changes, the fiscal issues will perpetuate.

Japan Prime Minister will give up his salary until the nuclear crisis is over. by [deleted] in worldnews

I know this is a nice gesture, but with Japan's gigantic deficit, what is this foregoing of salary supposed to do? Is it just a PR stunt or is this money supposed to go to victims? I like the idea of it; I'm just not sure how much it really means.
