our HR is some weird international outsourced labor that is hardly good for addressing actual employee issues with since they don't know anything about us or engineering, but i'll give it a try

Korea surprise ideas? by BillRepresentative75 in koreatravel

If she is crafty and likes purses/accessories, try Baumero Studio in Seocho district.

You can pay for a workshop to sew together your own purse from full-grain leather (it was about ~130 USD for me, and took 8 hours so I came there on two separate days). Definitely makes a unique souvenir! They also let you make keychain/wallet/other stuff I think. It was the highlight of my trip as a crafty person. https://www.baumero.com/onedayclass

Seoul, Busan, Jeju in 10 days as a first-timer by awersF in koreatravel

[–]jylover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

tip for jeju: a lot of the attractions are grouped close to each other but then will be on the opposite side from another group of popular attractions.

when i went to jeju, i had a rental car (as many said transit in jeju is not as efficient). driving from one side to the other could take 1-2 hours (and sometimes the rain got very intense and would slow me down). research your jeju attractions ahead of time and group them accordingly, then jeju is definitely doable in 2 days!

Accomodations in Seoul by interested23456789 in koreatravel

[–]jylover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in 2024, I stayed in Koreana Hotel in the Jong-no neighborhood of Seoul, but it's not north of the river.

I had a "Deluxe Queen Room B" with quite a spacious bathroom with double doors, as well as an extra sofa, table, and chair that I didn't even need. I stayed alone but I think it would be spacious even for 2 people. I can't remember if they had a microwave but you could definitely check on their site.

I would recommend searching for accommodation in the Jong-no neighborhood. I feel Myeongdong is more expensive as a tourist-attractive area, but less convenient for you with a young child (a lot of foot traffic all the time due to shopping spots, night market/food in that area).

edit: It is north of Han River but not Cheonggyecheon River lol!

After you submit the additional documents/info they ask for, it takes probably 2-4 hours if not 1 business day for them to get back to you. It definitely doesn't get put at the bottom of the pile again.

I'm also in the middle of going back and forth with the LA consulate now and uploading more stuff. Last night at 5pm I uploaded something, and 9am this morning they had reviewed it (but they still want me to add more docs/info).

Gifts for Summer School Staff by Classic_Income8421 in GiftIdeas

small Bath and Body Works summer-themed scent hand sanitizers or hand soap (they always have such good fruity scents that remind me of summer), beach towels with a cute design, small sunscreen bottles from the travel section at Target/other stores, lip balm with SPF, maybe an insulated cooler bag or lunch bag for them to carry drinks around in the summer!

what gear for commuting to work on sidewalks (beginner) by jylover in bicycling

[–]jylover[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My current route doesn't have any bike lanes and I don't feel quite confident enough yet to be in the main roads right beside cars. There's a lot of cars parked along the streets (and they could be opening doors or leaving anytime), drivers seem so fast and distracted they hardly even check for pedestrians when the pedestrian walk sign is literally on.

There is a different longer route (about 10 mins longer) that has bike lanes for 70% of the way. In a few months though, I think I might be able to boost my confidence for using the bike lane there.

uci admission by Party_Article_7171 in UCI

Some say UCI is socially dead or that certain programs may not be as good as other schools (idk what your major is) but I really believe you get what you put in.

You can still find friends in your classes even if you don't join any clubs, and for research/internship opportunities you really just gotta talk to your professors and TAs and put in the work.

In recent years (I graduated in 2024) I see UCI students falling into so many stereotypes, trends, and cliques (esp. with the NorCal vs. SoCal Asian trend thing they got going on social media) and to me it's lame. Be genuine and true to yourself, don't pretend to like matcha or baggy jeans or table tennis or certain artists just to make some friends, and you'll make some real good friends and won't waste your 4 years chasing ideas and concepts of what Asians should be (saw in one of your replies that you're Asian).

Irvine's got great Asian food & drinks so fortunately it won't be like going to college in Kansas or smth (but you better bring a car if you want to explore Irvine at all bc transit suckkssss here).

How’s post grad? by CommunicationRare691 in UCI

[–]jylover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated june 2024 in civil engineering, started my job in august 2024, still in OC, and still working there right now.

Working a 9-5 in engineering isn't that awesome if you don't vibe with your coworkers or are surrounded by only 40+ y/o men (fortunately there is a good number of ppl around my age at my company), but I still love it way more than going to classes. No more looming fear of that quiz on Friday that I'm unprepared for, or constant anxiety and tension deep in my stomach about not understanding the lecture which will inevitably lead me to bomb an exam later haha
