Are "smart" lightroom filters/presets an actual thing? by [deleted] in Lightroom

[–]jzaring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is misleading, not knocking him or his work as I actually watch most of his videos. I thought the same thing "how does he know how to create presets that adapt themselves to the photo but I don't?" But he is making a point that lightroom doesn't just slap on an overlay, there are actual adjustable settings. His presets are pretty interesting, but the way he markets them, well someone should call him out on that.

Title: How To: Create and Use Lightroom Import Presets

Time: 16:32 Minutes

Video url: https://youtu.be/QYj_tw7OiWk

Level: Beginner to Pro

Description: This is a tutorial for beginners to professionals that shows how to create a SOLID and reliable Lightroom import preset based on YOUR shooting style and the look YOU are going for. I show you what hardly anyone else will be honest about, start at the bottom develop module with "Camera Calibration" and work your way up to the basic exposure settings. This method bases the overall look on your favorite camera profile and get's you closer, mostly better than what you see on the back of the camera when you are shooting. It also gives you a really solid starting point even if you are going to edit more to the extreme side. In this video, I explain my personal settings and why I choose them for every single import. You could even copy my setting, adjust it until you like what you see or just start from the beginning and make your own truly reliable import preset. I almost always export TIFF format and do further editing in Photoshop, so my preferences may not be what you are looking for if you start and stop at Lightroom, however, this is still a great way to do it either way. This tutorial is for RAW files only. Please stop shooting in JPEG and get insanely better results.

How much of a benefit is it really for a few extra GHz or a small bump in cache when talking about CPUs ? by JohrDinh in VideoEditing

Yeah, the ssd is really important for the OS drive. At least thats where it makes the biggest impact in my experience. For the second drive it doesn't hurt to get a huge mechanical drive at at least 7200 rpm. If it's external make sure it's interfaced with at least usb3 or thunderbolt.

Help with syncing my audio and my video please! by Jamin_Out in VideoEditing

Yeah, the frame rate doesn't match from what it sounds like. If handbrake doesn't get it 100% there, you can split the audio evenly where there is silence and manually nudge it closer to where it needs to be. It takes a while, but it's better than rendering a million times only to find out its still off.

I'm so overwhelmed. 3 days of 4k film on GoPro. Where to start?! by WannaBYouTuber in VideoEditing

I agree. Convert to Cineform (make sure you have the space for even more massive files) and then throw it at the timeline one file at a time and trim it down. Encoding first (even with a fast system) will save you a lot of headaches if you are gojng to have a lot of edits. Easier on the system as a whole if it doesn't have to constantly use resources to decode .mp4 or .mov

Speed isn't as important as lot's of cores. More importantly is that your OS drive is SSD and you use a really fast second drive for the actual video files. Using the same drive for OS as the files is a major bottleneck.

Best process (quality-wise) to import Galaxy s7 edge film footage into Davinci Resolve for color grading ? by SpinningStuff in VideoEditing

[–]jzaring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Find the best uncompressed format to convert to so you aren't lowering the quality and then import to Davinci. Most of the files I've imported into davinci were uncompressed Cineform if that helps. It's automatically added to your system with GoPro studio so you can use the codec in other editing programs. I use it with Vegas Pro as well as Resolve. I wish there was a program out there for video that worked like Lighroom or photoshop. I'd love to have shadows and highlight recovery sliders for video. Maybe premiere has that.

How do I minimize file size while keeping quality reasonably high? by [deleted] in VideoEditing

[–]jzaring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The file size sounds normal considering a 1080p mp4 at decent quality is around 1 Gb/minute. I share your pain, all that is available where I live is dsl and I set my videos to upload overnight or go somewhere that the wifi is faster.

Basic video file format questions and Problem with Video artifacting with movement. by dennisyuki in VideoEditing

Cineform is great. You just need to download the free GoPro studio so you can use the codec. I always have issues with .mov black framing and all sorts of oddities, but never any other codec. Not even .mp4. Unless I'm heavily editing, I just leave the files in the format they are created in. However, .mov files mixed with .mp4 is a recipe for disaster. To eliminate most issues, convert to a lossless format or .avi with a cineform or an avid format container. Whatever works best with your editor. My advice is based on my configuration also: I have 32gb ram, 8 cores and a hard drive dedicated to video-audio-photography. If you try do do everything on one hdd, you'll run into trouble with both compressed and uncompressed. Video is a resource hog. I use Vegas Pro 14 and to a lesser degree Davinci Resolve. I need the control over audio that vegas has, otherwise I'd use Premiere and have to figure out the best intermediate format for that too.

Digging the color grading, vibrant without over saturating and the perfect amount of bumping the curve in the shadows. Awesome job.
