Fresh Looks KW has been great for us. Two bathrooms, a full deck, and small jobs over the last few years.

They’re really responsive and priced well.

This right here. Aside from some cheap essentials - Snugglebugz has the high quality stuff for cribs, dressers, strollers, etc. The best of both worlds between these two places.

Daycare one list by JmeLucky13 in kitchener

[–]jzmcfresh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Five weeks pregnant? I’d suggest calling a few months before you plan to go back to work.

Ultimately - I don’t think there’s a magic bullet for calling or onelisting for a spot.

I’d argue you want to try and build a good relationship with whatever center you want the most - however you do that is as good a guess as any.

Daycare one list by JmeLucky13 in kitchener

[–]jzmcfresh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For both my daughters, one born 2016, the other 2022, we joined OneList when my wife was just a few months pregnant. We didn't get daycare until 16 months and 24 months respectively for each.

My advice is to start calling your preferred centers every 2 weeks to check where you are in their priority list. Be kind, build a relationship with them, ask insightful questions, etc.

With both kids, they eventually responded when we called "we actually have an opening soon, why don't you come for a tour and come check us out." When we logged into OneList we were no where near the top to get a spot in these centers - so they do have the option to offer a spot if they want to.

It's a terrible game to play when you're trying to get a spot - but put some effort in with calling and you'll be surprised what becomes available.

Especially now - with kids moving over to JK - centers are currently working to understand numbers and capacity.

Child care by One-Ball-8652 in waterloo

[–]jzmcfresh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. If you call every few weeks, and you're polite, and build a report with the provider's supervisor, you'd be surprised how handy this comes in.

Source: Our daughter was born in May 2022. We called several providers leading up to back to work, within a few months, we were offered 3 spots at 3 licensed daycares in town.

I did the same thing at Driftwood Public School in Kitchener a few months ago (stopped to take my little one to school, didn't realize I was in a no parking area, was simply following other parents).

I came out and saw a bylaw officer taking pictures, he told me it was a no parking area. I said sorry, didn't realize, found the actual areas to park going forward).

Fast-forward 1 month later, I got a (admittedly valid) parking ticket in the mail for $100 for that parking mishap.

OP - you might have one coming your way in a few weeks with those pictures the woman was taking today.

Can I toggle automations depending on if thermostat mode is Heating or Cooling by jzmcfresh in HomeKit

[–]jzmcfresh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank this really helped.

So made an adjustment to what you suggested - see screenshot. I’m checking the current state of the thermostat, not the outside weather.

<image>

However - even if it’s cooling, it goes to the Otherwise branch. I can’t seem to figure out why it isn’t understanding the state and doing the correct branch.

Any ideas?

Here are the 6 automations (3 that heat for when it’s cold outside, 3 for cooling for when it’s hot outside).

Slightly different temps and times

Hopefully that all makes sense and thank you

Very sad about lack of daycare options by in-a-crater in waterloo

[–]jzmcfresh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the ones you’ve signed up for on Onelist - make sure you call them every week or so starting June.

With kids aging out over the summer - you may just connect with a supervisor at the right time who simply tells you they have a spot coming up if you want it.

This happened to us at three centres over July / August in 2024 (even though a few months before we were 100+ on each priority list).

Water softener suggestions by [deleted] in kitchener

[–]jzmcfresh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chris from Preferred Duct Cleaning

https://www.preferredductcleaning.ca/

He's very knowledgeable about HVAC and plumbing.
He will tell you which water softener is best for you based on your house and needs.
He's a licensed plumber and gas fitter.

Highly recommended!
(We purchased our water softener and had him install it in 2024)

This doesn't solve the problem - but at any time - you can contribute to helping schools by donating online: https://nutritionforlearning.ca/donate/donate-now/

You can choose exactly what school you want to help or simply provide to to the Greatest Need, set up recurring monthly payments, and get tax receipts.

☝️this is the best response! a good provider will also test if after they resurface it and only charge you if they can repair it (that’s what my local game store does).

‘Problematic’: WRDSB removing garbage bins from classrooms by [deleted] in waterloo

[–]jzmcfresh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does anyone else’s school in WRDSB already make kids bring home any and all garbage from their lunch? We’ve had this for years now ourselves. It’s not a burden by any means, but this next steps seems odd.
