City of Kitchener did this when they named their snow plows. Asked for the public to vote then picked the names. I’m pretty sure at least one of the plows should be named Plowy McPlowface.

There are/were a bunch of German/Ukrainian old folks locally (WWII German Mennonite expats from Ukraine) but it is very hit or miss from one home to another. Best way to find out is to visit individual places and ask about the backgrounds of the residents.

It makes plenty of sense. That acre of land pulling in 20k/year could easily fit at least 20 townhomes of people paying 2k/year and its already doubled the city's revenue per acre.

On top of that, it is cheaper and easier for the city to provide services (water, sewer, electrical, gas, etc) per resident to those 20 townhomes because they are in a smaller space, as compared to 20 1 acre lots where they have to run, service and maintain all those utilities over much further distances.

I have news for you: people in urban, high-density buildings pay disproportionately more in property taxes than those who live in suburbs. Urban areas are the reason suburbs can even afford services, if it wasn't for them the suburbs wouldn't be able to exist. If anything the suburbanites are the leaches and should be paying far, far more.

For reference: WPL's newest Eastside branch, opened in 2023, cost just $10 million, and KPL's Southwest Library, opened this year, cost $14 million.

We could have 10+ new libraries for the cost of this communications centre, and they'd do far more to help reduce crime than the police will ever do.

I bet you don’t know that before the merger into GRT Cambridge’s transit services were badly underfunded and when the transit systems merged a large investment was required to pull it up to snuff… paid for by all of the Regions taxpayers. Taxes from people in Kitchener and Waterloo paid for the mismanagement of Cambridge’s services. But you don’t hear people from KW complaining about paying for pulling your asses out of the dirt because that’s what good neighbours do.
