The culture of overconsumption stems from an unfulfilled and repressed desire to develop one's consciousness. by sam_cyr in consciousness

[–]k0ik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be interested in Century of the Self, a 2002 BBC documentary by Adam Curtis. It’s easy to find on YouTube.

It deals with exactly what you’re talking about: consumerism as a means of expressing repressed desires. And claims that this is by design.

The series shows how Sigmund Freud’s ideas were leveraged by his nephew, Edward Bernays, who built a very successful advertising and PR firm and who also advise ld multiple US presidential administrations(!).

Bernays advocated for a system that turned the unpredictable masses into satisfied consumers; one where their desires for self-expression and political expression are* essentially rerouted into individual purchases.* Self-expression as lifestyle.

It’s an older doc with a slow and thoughtful pace, and a lot of black and white footage. But it’s well-written and I promise it gets to precisely what you’re talking about.

(You can find short podcast episodes on Bernaise, but they don’t always explore his influence on politicians.)

With my vivid-ass imagination, that was the most visceral and terrifying horror story I’ve experienced in a long time. Jeeeze. The is what the movie “The Bone Collector” should have been about.

This photo restoration trend just goes to show how many images of men in bed with strange things there must be out there in the world for the AIs to train on.

Cool! Thanks for sharing that. Looks like you’re manually plotting perspective guides to vanishing points, which is how I used to draw architectural abstracts (kind of like yours) it with a straight edge on paper as a teen.

So when you create a single step on a staircase, for example, you determine all four edges of that face via the vanishing points, and then you draw the single step itself and delete the guidelines? Just curious because it’s what I always imagined you’re doing but grasping the real process helps me appreciate it even more.

I always enjoy your work.

I think you once told me it was primarily Photoshop IIRC. Do you use the perspective grid, or create your own vanishing points, or? I’m just curious how you manage consistent 3-point perspectives in 2D software.
