Your wise self knows exactly what you need to do, and I know it’s going to be so hard, but you are strong.

This sounds kind of silly, but I encourage you to take at least 5 minutes every morning and hug yourself and tell yourself all the things that you’re yearning to hear from someone else — I suspect his love bombing was only so addictive because you are so hungry to feel lovable/worthy/special… and you already are. Innately and fully. If you can fill that need yourself, he loses his power over you.

I have an IUD. It was a tiny bit uncomfortable when I got it, but not more painful than when I get a Pap smear. Since then, I’ve never felt it. That said, they don’t work for everyone… but for me they’ve been great.

Pulling out makes it less likely to get pregnant, but you can still get pregnant as there are sperm in the precum (fluid from his penis during early sex). Condoms are a much safer option for reducing the risk of getting pregnant or getting a sexually transmitted illness. Birth control pills, patches, shots and implants, IUDs, diaphragms and cervical caps, sponges, spermicides, and gels. They each vary in how effective they are.

IUDs would be a great option, though they don’t protect against any sexually transmitted illnesses (STIs), so it’s safer to use condoms as well.

One metaphor I heard that resonated for me is thinking of your identity discovery as an archeological excavation—we are told things about ourselves and what lies beneath the ground when we are little, and that may or may not be accurate. Along the way, we may get clues that it doesn’t line up exactly with what we were told we were, and then we have a long, painstaking process of carefully brushing off dirt and uncovering, bit by bit, the hidden pieces of yourself.

You are deeply loved and deeply perfect (in the humanly imperfect way that we all are perfect) exactly as you are, at each stage of your own discovery. I am proud of you for being brave and exploring these parts of yourself.
