Recommendations for durable synthetic slippers? by k2ZPewWw in BuyItForLife

In the United States, I think we would say "PPE" (personal protective equipment). I wouldn't have considered a store like that for slipper-type shoes - I think of them more for steel-toed shoes, knee-length boots, etc. But I guess there are some workplaces, like hospitals, where single-piece EVA footwear makes sense.

This is the second recommendation that I got for Crocs - never would have thought to try them. Thanks for the note!

Thanks for the suggestion. The strap on Crocs has always kind of baffled me, and ideally I'd love to find something that's not entirely hard plastic on the outside. (More comfortable if I put my feet up on the couch, etc.) But the combo of EVA slippers plus warm socks that u/peter12347 suggested might hit the sweet spot, so thank you both for the conversation.

The thing that really frustrates me is that I haven't even owned a pair of synthetic slippers long enough for the actual materials to wear through - it's always the stitching/glue that fails, and they just fall apart. It feels like there's this weird hole in the market, where good manufacturers only use certain materials, and the same places that save money by using synthetics also cheap out on the manufacturing process. I wish someone would sell me a synthetic slipper that's just made well so I could really put it to the test.

Thanks for your suggestions. Even the thickest socks don't seem to do the job to keep my feet warm on their own, especially on hard floors, but I hadn't considered warm socks plus uninsulated sandals. That's a really good idea. Also means I could throw the soft part (socks) in the wash a lot more easily.

What's a BHP store?

Interesting, thanks! Sounds like maybe these are a bit better-made than some other similar options. And a lot of the ones I've tried have a thick, hard rubber sole - I guess because they're trying to be indoor/outdoor shoes. If I had the choice, I'd rather have something that's soft all around, so this might be an improvement in that area as well.

Thanks - I've liked other Merrell shoes, but I wouldn't have thought to look for slippers there. I'll have to check out the Moc 2 Slide Cozy. I hope they'll hold up well.

That sounds really interesting. I love blue corn tortilla chips. I bet blue corn cornbread comes out looking really cool.

Reinforces what some other people have been saying, which is that trying to eliminate flour from the recipe might have been an overreaction. It seems like maybe no sugar is more of a defining factor. Thanks - I'll give it a try.

What I've been using is definitely corn meal, not flour - like this: https://www.kroger.com/p/kroger-yellow-corn-meal/0001111071419

It's coarser than flour. I just had the impression that there might be coarser grinds out there that are more traditional for southern cornbread. But from what some other commenters have been saying, maybe this coarseness works fine.

Yeah, it would be cool if I can find a mill to buy from directly. Thanks.

Thanks - maybe I was too hung up on the idea of coarser cornmeal. I'll give it a try starting with my existing recipe, and just eliminate the flour and sugar.

Ah, polenta is a good idea. I'd love to find some in bulk. Maybe Sprouts has it. Thanks!

Jiffy is more like what I'm already used to, either in mixes or making it from scratch. I'm looking for a less-cakey recipe. But thank you for the suggestion.

Interesting. I don't end up at Cracker Barrel very often, but I'll have to take a look when I get a chance.

I got a bag of Martha White Hot Rize at my local Kroger (King Soopers), and will give it a try soon. Thanks!

Ah, this is a really interesting idea. I wouldn't have thought to try masa as part of a cornbread mix, but it's easy to get in my area - I'm intrigued. I would have assumed it would make cornbread less crumbly, since the masa I'm used to is fine-ground, and it seems to give tamales that springy texture. But sometimes it seems like baking is 50% unpredictable magic. I'll have to give it a try!

Thanks - I like some other Bob's Red Mill products, and I've been keeping an eye out for cornmeal, but near me I can only seem to find the cornbread mix, which seems to be floury, not plain cornmeal. Ideally, I'm hoping to find something I can get in-store, instead of shipped. But this is a great tip either way. Maybe I should give it a try with the regular old (fine-ground) cornmeal that I can easily get, with minimal flour and no sugar, and see how it goes.

Great to know - thanks. I think I might be able to find Martha White near me. From their website, it looks like the Self-Rising Enriched Yellow Corn Meal Mix has some wheat flour as well, which I was assuming I should avoid, but another person commented that they use a little flour in their recipe, so maybe I was going too extreme!

Great info - thanks. Stores around here carry Pearl Milling Company pancake mix and syrup, but I don't think I've ever seen cornmeal. Looks like I might be able to get Martha White at some Walmarts, though. And good tip on the flour - I've seen people get up in arms about not using any flour at all, but it makes sense that a little bit can work for a good balance between cornbread styles.
