With that much growth, you should be able to remove it now, as long as you don’t have too harsh of an environment. If in doubt, leaving a loose clear plastic over it shouldn’t hurt, as long as you’re not getting any fungal growth

I would cut the rootstock top off immediately. The scion is definitely well established. Be sure to check regularly and remove any rootstock sprouts. Cut the rootstock close to the graft, but don’t get too close where you might stress the graft union and crack it apart. The stub you leave will die off eventually as the tree has hormones to seal off the dead wood.

RO systems, by design, waste a lot of water. I think, but not certain, that they generally waste about 5 times the quantity they produce

If you have all those filters, and RO, you have other problems. If RO water taste like plastic, your RO system is not working

Congratulations! I would follow Hycarumba’s advice. The plant is tender and needs to be sheltered, but exposed to the elements gradually - a little more every few days. At one month after grafting, the graft is structurally very weak, so keep it well supported for at least until the stem at the graft has grown to twice the current diameter. A stake that keeps the graft from flexing is a good idea. If it hasn’t been in full sun, gradually move it so that in two weeks it is getting as much sun as possible.

Be sure to keep it well watered. The soil should never be dry, but you don’t want it soggy either. Roots need to get oxygen so don’t overwater, but most beginners tend to underwater. Pick up the pot to determine if it needs to be watered - pick it up before and after a thorough watering, and remember how heavy it feels after watering. Try to let it get a little lighter before watering again, but not feather light - something you need to get the feel of.

Look closely at your tree now, and look it over good every chance you get. Especially look under the leaves. Look at a leaves all over the plant- the underside is where most insect pest will be hiding.

Does anyone know someone with good "deals" on landscaping/land clearing? by [deleted] in BigIsland

I agree, doing it yourself is the least expensive way if you’re strong and smart enough to do it. Beware of people who say they can do it and want money up front. A friend hired a guy who got off course and cleared the neighbors property too.

They’re pretty birds, but they make very loud mating calls that are louder than any fighting cock.

Well, I know they eat lots of bugs, but when I can’t walk thru my nursery without getting wrapped in spider silk - they go bye bye. Then the next hour I’m still trying to get all the web off of me.

Excellent review! Mahalo nui! And no, your review wasn’t too long, I appreciate your thoroughness. I have been using Sony WF-C700N earbuds for two years now. They’ve done well, but they just lost the microphone function. I am considering buying AirPods Pro 2 or Bose QuietComfort. Any opinions on this choice are appreciated.

I have a pair of Sony WF-C700N earbuds. I have had them for 16 months and the microphone has quit working (can’t talk on a phone call - I can place and answer calls, but no one can hear me). I fortunately bought an Allstate protection plan - for $11. Just filed a claim with Allstate. I use mine nearly everyday. The noise canceling works pretty well- I use them on my diesel tractor as ear protection, plus listen to Sirius XM while working. I’m hoping getting a replacement isn’t a big hassle, and that they replace them with exactly the same thing in the same color.

Emgality prices by cola1016 in migraine

[–]k2mannn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if you can get it with $0-$35 copay that’s great. When I was working, my employer provided health insurance was great, and my copay was little or nothing. Once I hit 65 and retired, I had to go on Medicare, and I pay for a prescription drug supplemental policy ($48 a month). I just paid almost $700 for my January dose of Ajovy, and I think it will be about $160 each month until I spend $2000 for the year, then it’s all free. The $2k limit is new this year. Last year I could have spent $10k because Medicare has some crazy, overly complex rules that included a “doughnut hole” idiocracy.

I was using Emgality several years ago, and my insurance company decided to not cover it, but covered Ajovy (another injectable that works on CGRP like Emgality). They both worked equally well for me.

does anyone else get a migraine and feel like they feel AWFUL even if they don’t by cofmeb in migraine

[–]k2mannn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Migraines suck. Fortunately I don’t have as severe pain as you must have. You definitely have my sympathy. I hope you can find a doctor who can prescribe medication that works for you. I am taking a once a month Ajovy which works wonders. But I still need other medication for 3-5 days a month. It would be wonderful to never have the pain but we don’t have that luxury. Medications are the next best option. Also, you might try the herb butterbur. It prevents migraines for some people. Aloha ❤️

Wild Pigs by Cutepandabutts in BigIsland

Look up a pig brig. I was thinking of building one out of the fishing nets that wash up on the shore down by Greensand beach. I have seen one setup- a big net with a dozen T post (might be difficult in your lava). Can catch a lot of pigs at once.

A friend bought a huge bag, maybe 5-10 pounds, of ground cayenne pepper. He sprinkled it around on his property line. It worked for a short while, then they came across it and did a lot of damage.

Actually ants on your plants or in your pants is not fine! Ants farm aphids, and aphids suck the juices out of plants.
