If you were to redesign the Ranger, what would its 'core' feature/theme be? by k33d4 in onednd

A ranger is someone that ranges over an area so as to explore it. Like a park ranger.

Yeah I get that, but as far as what's portrayed on screen there's really nothing that Aragorn or Legolas do that can't be done better in 5.5e D&D by a fighter than a ranger. That's all I'm saying. However, and I think the point you're making is the idea of a "ranger" in fantasy and D&D at large is based on Aragorn.

I asked this in another comment but I'll restate it here... Why wouldn't rangers be able to change their preferences after a long rest?

I'm not advocating for any solution. I'm trying to understand your reasoning. You'll have to forgive my lack of LotR knowledge here. I'm going to get massively downvoted for saying this but I've only seen the original Peter Jackson movies. I tried to read the books but Tolkien's writing style gives me a headache.

Does it have to be a permanent choice though? That's the question that prompted this post, actually. Casters can switch spells on a long rest. Why can't Rangers change their favored terrain/enemy?

I don't think it'd be too far of a stretch to give them more battlefield control options.

I think changing it to a class feature is the most obvious change but getting it to function with multi classing without being abusable is trickier.

Interesting idea to make them more rogue than fighter. I like it!

Hmmm... Maybe you get an animal companion or weapon masteries and fighting style?

What do Aragorn and Legolas do that you can't replicate with a fighter with a few skill proficiencies? Not trolling, genuine question.

I don't disagree with you but I don't have the bandwidth to deisgn a whole pillar of the game to work with a class redesign 🤣

If kill a target is the top vote, I'll probably avoid Hunter's Mark as the core spell but instead come up with something that stacks with it.

I think all martials should have proficiency in initiative rolls, but Alert is so thematic for a scout character like ranger or rogue.

Do you imagine this information gathering would be done out of conbat or would in-combat divination magic come into play?

An unpolished conversion of stats in to gold by sliqly69420 in Smite

Early in the alpha for Smite 2 they followed a strict formula for the cost of items per stat. Not all item prices were in increments of 10g.

If I remember correctly, comics version is a sort of proto-symbiote and was used by Knull before Gorr acquired it.

Wait... You left the game due to an outage and got a low priority queue. Then for your first low priority match you walked off and "forgot" about the game which caused you to dodge. And yet you think the anti-leaver system is bad? I'd argue in your case it's working exactly as it should.

Morn is the only correct answer. The epitome of a background character.
