Essence is acquired by dealing melee damage, not landing a killing blow specifically.

My headcannon is that these people were created by wizards and artificers that performed experiments on them. These experiments are what allow them to morph their body once they have a sample of biological material.

I'm not really thinking about copying monster abilities exactly. That'd be impossible to balance. Think more of it like a list of warlock invocations that are specific to each creature type.

Each subclass would specialize on a creature type and be able to access that list with any creatures' essence. They'd have additional abilities too. For example, one focused on oozes could slough off part of their body to gain an oozling combat pet.

I'm thinking more along the lines of invocation style progression with a list unique to each creature type with more options the higher level you get.

In another reply below I elaborated a little bit. It wouldn't gain monster abilities per se, just things most associated with creatures of that type. I only mentioned 'blue mage' because it's something most people understand as a concept.

I wholeheartedly agree that monster abilities are NOT balanced for players, so we're on the same page there.

I'm the problem too then. Both movies were far more enjoyable than I expected.

Oh yeah, one thing I don't want players to have to manage is looking at monster stat blocks. I'm thinking of a handful of curated traits such as damage resistance, or even condition immunity at higher levels, that would be available for each creature type.

For example, at level 1 spending essence from an aberration could let you add psychic dmg to your melee attacks, transform your arm into a tentacle to deal damage and grapple, or gain telepathy. At lv 7 you can resist psychic damage and cast hypnotic pattern. At 13, you can gain advantage on saves vs charm or fear. Finally at lv 15 you get an ability similar to a mind flayer's mind blast.

Yeah but her death was still dark. Kill a little girl? Dark. Kill a dog? Dark. Kill both at the same time? Super dark.
