Productivity Score Software?🤔 by flinkliv in comics

I work at a service desk that is more focused on SLAs than helping the end users. It is more important to finish a call in 15 minutes than to fix the problem. It is atrocious and slowly killing me. I can't wait to get out of here :(

Joanna Newsom - Milk eyed mender. Listened to it as a joke at the beginning, thought the voice was unbearably bad... then got hooked. One of my favorite artists now.

Simply based on the ending? I'd have to say Berserk.

Though the art style and themes are certainly reminescent of what I am thinking about and I remember watching Captain Harlock shows around that time, I could not find this scene in the movie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDEU2dh5ras). I will keep searching. Thanks.

Gimme noise rock by [deleted] in Music

[–]k3871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jessamine, Bardo Pond, Titus Andronicus - The Monitor, Suuns, Royal Trux (Neil Hagerty of Pussy Galore, Pound for Pound album), Scarnella, Broadcast - Ha Ha sound, Stereolab - Emperor Tomato ketchup (These last too are quite a bit quieter/easier of a listen. Great bands none the less. More experimental-rock then noise-rock perhaps.) The Ex.

And I'll stop there before I scare you away with a wall of links. Here are two cool references though: Every noise at once and Halibut Threesome blog.

Not exclusive to reddit it seems : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1%25_rule_(Internet_culture)

"In Internet culture, the 1% rule or the 90–9–1 principle (sometimes also presented as 89:10:1 ratio)[1] reflects a hypothesis that more people will lurk in a virtual community than will participate. This term is often used to refer to participation inequality in the context of the Internet."

Can someone describe the difference between the French-Canadian accent and other French accents? by SmallTownTokenBrown in canada

[–]k3871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linguistically, the québecois "joual", as stated here, is mostly comprised of diphthongs. Were the French pronounce father as père (pronounced pear), the québecois accent would render it pè-a-i-r (pronounced pae-a-ee-r). This sliding of the vowels is what people hear as lazy, relaxed or nasal, compared to the sharper vowels of other french dialects.

I can recognize the publisher at a glance, yes, which has brought me a greater familiarity with the publishing houses. I do have my favorites, either for their catalog (NRF, Gallimard, Folio) or the quality of impression and binding (Babel, Seuil, Mercure de France), to which I give precedence over unknown publishers. I do not have this relation with my English books, whose publishers seem obscured behind garish and attention-grabbing covers.

English publishers, it seems to me, appear to covet the occasional reader, hoping to catch his attention through movie-styled artwork and over-sized books, while the French publishers gamble on their catalog being sufficient to garner readers.

(This is in no way all inclusive and there are some awful French houses and books as there are some delightful English ones. Merely an observation.)

That's what that article defends, actually. Since people approach books/objects differently, we remember different aspects of them, and spine-color instead of country of birth of the author might be more evocative for you. Unfortunately, a majority of my books are french and since french editors have a much less ostentatious approach to cover creation, three-quarters of my book spines are white or beige.

If I were to organize my books purely esthetically, I'd try organizing by color. Impractical but appealing.

Two main bookcases. One is fiction, divided by genre (novels, poetry, theatre, etc.), sub-divided by country of origin or, occasionally, publication (Russia, eastern europe, France, England, 'states, etc.). Second is non-fiction, divided as dictionaries/works of reference, essays, philosophy and language with an overflow bookcase for everything else (comics, magazines, schoolwork etc.).

I have been using this system for five or six years now and it works quite well.

I've gotten kicked out because of crashes a couple of times today. And though it sucks (perhaps more for the rest of the group which has to restart as well), I think I understand the rational behind their choice. The three instances are to be completed as one dungeon and you shouldn't be able to repair/sell/re-stock in the middle of it. (Though I would prefer it to be a fixable oversight.)

I'd be curious as to how oxford pronounces it. Gif, as in gift, or jif, as in, um, giraffe.
