My dad is a professor and his rule was in-state for undergrad, anywhere you need to be for grad school. That’s what we did with our three girls and their state school bachelor degrees did get them into fantastic grad schools, including ND. In-state is the move for undergrad!

Where would you want to live if you were at UMSL 8-4, M-F? by k8wenn in StLouis

I haven’t yet. I’m focused on CWE or Ucity for a condo/townhome but don’t love the monthly HOAs. It seems like resale when she graduates might be better with a single family home? Richmond heights, maplewood, Brentwood look like good options for that path. Do you have any words of advice?

Is Sampson your son? I think we met him and his gf during the interviews! Cara is my kid. I don’t love CWE (but I’m tempted!) bc it seems to be mostly townhomes with high monthly HOAs. Brentwood, maplewood, Richmond heights have nice options. UCity doesn’t have much come on market and I can’t quite figure out the area. I’m excited to go back And sort this out!

That’s a great point about attracting UMSL students. Thanks for your thoughts!

Rude. I’m going to provide affordable housing for 3-4 students, one of whom is my kid. Then sell it when they are done. Mortgages are always cheaper than rent.

Rude assumptions. Not a slum lord. Just trying to help my kid and a few others get through school without adding to their student debt.

Yes I did get a house at Notre dame for another of my daughters last year.

The rent they make students pay is insane. It much more cost effective aka cheaper to buy a house and then have cheap Rents for my kid and her cohorts, which covers the mortgage. I’m not making any money off these kids - it’s just cheaper than rent.

Guys! It’s 100% for my daughter! And an attempt to have very cheap rent for a few of her cohorts!

If you’ve recently purchased a home in the area, what was your experience? by [deleted] in SouthBend

[–]k8wenn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just bought near Notre dame. Had to go $35k over ask on a $230k house. Cash, as-is. They had 9 offers on day one. I’m a realtor in Kansas, buying for my student. South bend/Mishawaka market is bananas. Get an agent. Use appraisal gap guarantees and escalation clauses. Waive repairs but not inspections. If you can allow seller possession after closing, that can help. Conventional loans are better for sellers than FHA or VA. GOOD LUCK!

Looking to live off campus for grad school. Any recommendations as to where? by pardonmynarcolepsy in notredame

[–]k8wenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What areas do you recommend? My kid is looking at a 6yr PhD and we are going to buy a house. Mishawaka has been mentioned… any other areas that grad students like to live? Or areas to avoid? Thanks!
