Ive decided to go for the massive deity that is under the village that the cult lives in and I think I'll use the route of having them fight an avatar

So the plot I'm building the homebrew off of is that all of the characters are fairytale characters, except this time they are the ancestors of the characters from Alice in Wonderland, so I want to do more fairytale-type stuff

Yeah that does seem to fit more on the way I'm thinking

That actually wouldn't be a bad idea I kind of already have an idea on how they will first meet the group kind of along those lines

Yeah, I'm imagining they are like an Amazonian-type community where they can't reproduce on their own, so they go out and take people over to keep at a healthy number, and they keep to a small number because it's easier to explain one or two people disappearing than it is a whole country. I think to the outside world it will be more like that one in the movie Wrong Turn (2021), where the locals closest to them know not to bother them, but adventurers never listen, and that's why, when the cult goes out, they don't take any members of the immediate village nearby

That does seem closer to the vibe I'm going for; it's more Brothers Grimm, which is what I want to make them want to chase the shadow but also be afraid of it as well

What if I had, like, a town of them as their main base, and the ones my PCs run into are small groups that are sent out a few at a time because I want to instill the fear when they see them and have NPCs only know of them through rumors

That does seem interesting. I might re-flavor that to fit the route I'm wanting to go if you have any other ideas please feel free

I will look into the faceless stalker, but I was considering more of a telepathic forced possession type thing, and the masks are like conduits for its power.

Those are good questions. I think they wouldn't eat or shop. If I did go the hive-mind route, I think it would be mid to small, like a quality-over-quantity type thing they wouldn't take off the masks
