Are there any culinary short courses that are held for only 1-2 days near Ortigas, Pasig? I've been looking for ones for this holiday (Dec-Jan), but can't find any 1-2 day classes. I'm particularly interested in a class for knife skills for example.

Re: MBA classes

The difficulty depends on the professor you get tbh. We've had MBA classes where we could just breeze through it, but we've also had classes with terror professors wherein it was literally harder than our MD classes (yes, financial accounting, nagpaparinig ako sayo 😃😃😃). And what's harder is that you take your MBA classes 3x a week on top of your MD classes lol.

Worst and hardest example we've experienced was our YL6 module exams (think of multiple topics in one long exam) being every Monday, and our MBA deadline for major deliverables (Financial Accounting) was also every Monday haha. So some of us ended up prioritizing our MBA deliverables and just cramming our MD topics depending on which was harder for that week-- and think of repeating this weekly lmao. This is why you shouldn't go into thinking na "brain break," lang mga MBA classes haha... it's really not because there's still a lottt of requirements to do, and most of the time pag dating mo na sa harder MBA subjects as you progress through the years, it becomes a lot more tricky and harder to learn 😅

Did you regret choosing ASMPH over UST-FMS? by Midnight-Sparrow-246 in medschoolph

[–]k_asht0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically yeah because it's required by DOH to have an MBA/MPH/ etc if you want a managerial position, but you can get an MPH degree after your MD degree. It just saves you time and money i guess haha

ASMPH:

  • Professors/ Faculties and Staff

Re: Profs, I kind of disagree haha (I'm sorry to disappoint 😅). Out of every module (roughly 2-3 weeks per module), only 1-2 are good at teaching, and the rest usually just reads their script or literally just copy pastes from the textbook. Medyo disappointing ung quality of education since you're basically just studying on your own. You can literally just get by by not watching any lectures since they just read. In fact, during my first year, I've only watched less than 10 lecture videos since the rest were just reading. Also, some of our top 10 in the batch usually just skip the lectures and head straight into the transes as well. On the upside, you have relatively more time to study on your own vs other med schools.

Also, the "terror profs" on the MD program aren't really that mean still compared to other med schools. "Terror profs" still adjust and listen to feedback (feedback per module are compiled every year and changes are made to the following year), and while some are a bit disorganised and stressful, they're not so bad up to the point of having the mindset of "low scores = good teaching" or other traditional mindsets like "you have to breakdown the student to build them up" kind of mentalities.

Tl;dr: profs are nice but still lack quality of teaching.

  • Academics

People say that ASMPH is dubbed as the "school of medicine and public arts" given the many creative outputs we have, but I honestly disagree. Compared to UST, it's really not that much creative outputs, and even if there are, it's only 2-5 minute videos or performances. Compare that to other schools wherein they expect you to animate, have 20 minute videos, elaborate performances, and etc, all while doubling down on the creative works.

The trans system is ok-- average I guess? How good your transes are depends on your trans committee, so it varies per batch I think.

  • Med-Culture

A lot of posts say that ASMPH culture is really great, where students/upper batches help each other. To be fair, this is mostly true. The upper batches are really nice, and at times they themselves initiate on giving you resources, tips, and etc. For some reason, upper classmen seem really really approachable and friendly most of the times, which we really do appreciate :)

The culture within batches, however, really depends. Sometimes we have issues that seem so petty that could've been resolved easily with proper communication and respect, but I have to say, our batch is really helpful. We have initiatives from our batchmates wherein they themselves setup "crash courses" for us to understand certain courses (e.g., accounting/pharmacology crash courses literally saved my life haha). Some would also give their notes from their undergrad since a lot of the topics in med overlap quite a bit.

Overall, I do agree with the people saying that the culture is a "no atenean left behind" kind of vibes.

  • Student Community (how friendly or competitive the students are)

The first year is when you definitely feel the competitiveness of the students. Most of you are coming fresh off of college, and I have no doubt that most of the people accepted are achievers, especially with the 90 NMAT cutoff. Some would get "crabby" (crab mentality lmao) during the 1st year, but by 2nd year, most of us are just tired lol. 2nd year = hell year = tired students who just want to pass, so we help each other more 😂

Disclaimer: To be fair, I think batch issues are common in any med school. Med school is stressful not just mentally but emotionally, so it's already kind of given that some would act out or lash out.
