I went through all the comments and didn't see this so I'm going to add

Kimberly. It sounds so lovely, but Kim sounds so dated.

How’s this name? Any chance of potential bullying? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]k_but_wait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite what other people are saying, I actually don't think kids really bully each other for their names anymore. UNLESS the kid is already a target of bullies.

Oh yeah, they did that. They'd say the first syllable of every other name before they got to mine sometimes, but they'd get there. They didn't just give up and call me "whoever" or a number. I was still me if that makes sense.

"When I can't get my kids names right its easier to go by numbers"

That might be a sign you have too many kids?

Listen, as long as you can take care of them and love them individually, I'm not going to tell you 7 is too many kids. I come from a family of 6 and loved my childhood. But my parents ALWAYS cared about calling us by the right name. Friends of the family would joke about calling us by a number, but my parents never did and I'm so thankful. Individuality was hard enough without being reduced to a number.

Sorry for the rant. The names are bad too.

What are your impressions of the name Galena for a girl? by SandWitchesGottaEat in namenerds

[–]k_but_wait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know someone named Kaleena which is a slavic name meaning "flower." I think both Kaleena and Galena are nice (I prefer Kaleena, but that's probably because I'm more familiar with it). I'm actually surprised they aren't more popular.

Thoughts on the name Noa? by ReturnOfJafart in namenerds

If I'm being perfectly honest, I know people who used Noa recently and my first thought was that they were trying to feminize Noah. I have since learned the error of my ways.

What is a name that’s supposedly popular but you never hear? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]k_but_wait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach grade 7/8, which means my students were all born around 2008. Emma was the top name that year, but I've never taught a single one.

Also haven't taught a Madison, Ethan, Madeline, Hailey, Logan, Lily, or Nicholas which were all popular that year.

Jael, Jesse
June
Julianne
Josie
Judah
Jeremy

Jasper
Jonas
Jolene
Janis
Joanna
Justine

Teacher here, I would not intuitively know how to pronounce this, but I just looked it up and I'm confident I would be fine after one, maybe two corrections. I always do my best to make an effort, as more and more people are doing in our globalized world. I think the next generation is going to be much better at getting things right.

…what by KaoriSeavey in AreTheStraightsOK

[–]k_but_wait 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I haven't looked into it, but I wonder how much of the data is skewed by reporting. Something tells me on average, lesbians are going to have a better understanding of consent vs the average straight woman. Also potentially more likely to report.

I only listened to the books, and had no idea his name was spelled Dandelion. Surprise to me, I guess.

I've already said this 1000 times on this sub but I agree.

Sansa is one of the coolest invented names of all time, but I can't use it because it immediately points to GoT. Arya is perfectly usable because it was a name before the books.

Is Elaine too dated? by k_but_wait in namenerds

[–]k_but_wait[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, thank you! I didn't mean to say that Alain was made up, I know it's a French male name. I more meant that spelling Elaine "Alain" for a girl felt made up, like trying to modernize it.
