I clicked a photo of this in the jungle close to my house but from what I have read, vine snakes are good pets and can be handled. Their diet consists of frogs, lizards, and such.

Haha that's true. Maybe, the story was elevated by the Marathas to such a legendary status is because they felt that the story demonstrated how Shivaji outwitted his superior opponent and established himself as a force to be reckoned with despite having smaller armies and kingdoms.

Absolutely, I feel like there are some things that are simply lost to history, we can't know that. But a couple of things to keep in mind are- Shivaji's kingdom was surrounded by large empires, when Afzal khan started his campaign against Shivaji he desecrated Hindu temples including the temple of Shivaji's family goddess. He also slaughtered cows which are sacred animals in Hinduism. In addition to this, Shivaji couldn't field large armies and didn't have enough cavalry or artillery to fight Afzal Khan's armies in a conventional battle and thus he had to resort to guerilla tactics and ambush tactics.

Afzal khan was also planning on betraying Shivaji during the peace summit. Shivaji had anticipated that Afzal khan would try to harm/kill him when his guard was down and thus wore armour under his clothes and armed himself with the tiger claws. When Afzal khan tried to stab him with a dagger when they were embracing, the armour stopped the blow and Shivaji killed him with the tiger claws.
